Freak Thoughts Making Mainstream
Yesterday I was watching ABC News in Australia. It is closely similar to the BBC in Britain, and consequently the standards are very high. During the financial update, an expert was asked about where the market was headed. And to my surprise he mentioned the shift of the magnetic poles (not new news, but it has had a lot of recent exposure…) – possibly causing natural disasters, and potentially putting risk upon the stocks of insurance companies.
To my mind, this is just one step short from the US Government starting to act on news launched from, and provided by, crowds of conspiracists.
George Lucas Update
LucasFilm has responded to the recent story about George Lucas being a 2012er, as told by Seth Rogen on TV show Ellen:
[Lucas] was not serious when he talked about the end of the world in 2012, but he is an adamant believer that the world is flat, that Stonehenge was built by aliens, and that the sun revolves around the Earth. These are among the many subjects he commonly discusses at length with Elvis, who he’s going to digitally insert into Indy 5, along with a roster of famous dead actors. Seth Rogen is a funny guy, but George and Steven are taking Chris Rock with them on the Millennium Falcon!
Hard to tell if the denial is serious or not…
WikiLeaks: 2012 Cable?
As is often the case for stories found at Sorcha Faal’s WhatDoesItMean.com, the one titled Leaked Cable Reveals Obama Sent To “2012 ALICE Bunker” Due To Norway “Spiral”, I get the feeling it is made up, or even provided…
Supposedly there is a cable, which they imply has been sourced from WikiLeaks, that links the Norway spiral of January 2010 with a suggestion that the US President hides in a bunker:
¶1. (S) RNoAF response to HAARP/CERN spiral anomaly was limited to 175 km. with testing parameters met within 3degrees of arc access.
¶2. (S) Post recommends activation of 2012 Project ALICE Bunker for POTUS/SECDEF
Of course when you do a search of WikiLeaks not only does this cable not exist, but neither is there any mention of bunkers, spirals or the 2012 meme. I guess if a leaked document ever does mention these things, the internet will truly be …
Russia Will Save Us From Asteroids
While other countries um and ah, Russia has bold plans. They are proposing a global monitoring system that some say could cost $300 billion. Obviously the US would rather spend that on a few months of war… Whether it is feasible or not, the land of super-bunkers deserves praise for even suggesting that such defence systems are necessary.
A large asteroid hitting the Earth could mean the worst natural disaster in millions of years – and threaten most forms of life.
“A giant tsunami wave will rise, submerging coastal cities. If a meteor hits land, a massive dust cloud will rise, and cause severe climate change,” Director of the Space Systems Research Centre, Valery Menshikov explains.
As a leading space engineer, Menshikov believes we have to do anything it takes to make sure this never happens.
His team has developed IGMASS, a groundbreaking network of satellites and telescopes on different continents. The system would …
Shaolin Temple Building a 2012 Bunker?
Every now and then I get a little bit speculative
Here are the facts:
The Shaolin Temple is 1500 years old, and one of the most ancient still functioning sites in China. One could imply that the people running the place are powerful
It is the home of Shaolin Kung Fu
Located on Mount Song, one of the four Sacred Mountains of China
Built by a Chinese Emperor, Xiaowen
Clearly an important place, housing important people. As 2012 mania sweeps through China (according to some reports), we receive the following news:
The abbot of Shaolin Temple in central China’s Henan Province said the newly built underground funeral parlor is for monks’ ashes only and not for sale, after suspicions arose online claiming the parlor would be used for profit.
… Located in the western part of Shaolin Temple, the parlor consists of five caves and has an area of about 100 square meters.
Could this be a …
The Other Drilling Disaster: Turkmenistan 1971-2010
Came across this at the 2012 Forum, and it’s just bizarre – like the BP oil leak that has the USA upset, in eastern Europe there is a leak that has been unplugged for almost 40 years! Makes for a better pic as well…
Environmental disasters: Gulf oil spill lesson # 1- Drilling can sometimes unleash a hell on Earth (June 8, 2010)
Giant hole still burning in the desert
DERWEZE, Turkmenistan – Geologists were excited to find rich deposits of methane gas when they conducted geological surveys in Turkmenistan in the 1970’s but almost no one could imagine the hellish nightmare they would later follow the discovery. In 1971, engineers begin drilling for natural gas just outside the small village of Derweze, Turkmenistan. The exploratory hole soon ruptured into the opening of a large underground cavern. The massive cavern was filled with methane gas. Plugging the hole proved fruitless. Underground pressures soon caused the methane …
Mayan “Atlantis” Discovered in the Caribbean
Researchers using satellite images have found what may be an ancient Mayan city. Although nature is capable of making straight lines and geometric patterns (opinions are still divided on Yonaguni which is underwater off Japan), the grid layout suggests it was created by humans. Lying at depths of between 40 and 70 feet, they estimate that this area would have been above sea level 4500-8000
years ago, making it easily the most ancient city discovered in the region. If it proves to be real, perhaps there are stelae down there that can give us clues regarding the year 2012?
As Graham Hancock has been telling us for years (see his book Underworld), given that we know sea levels have risen extensively since the last Ice Age, and that civilisations tend to base themselves by the sea, the place to look for very old artefacts is in the sea. Unfortunately very few archaeologists are …
What if nothing happens in 2012?
This is a common question, and one that especially concerns 2012 prophets, 2012 fearmongers, and 2012 spiritual evolutionists – for they could all have egg on their face.
First of all, there’s a good chance something will happen, because most years somewhere in the world there is a major story. 2012 will still have legs, because proponents of the meme will say things like:
that earthquake / volcano / tsunami is the beginning of the end
that politician just voted in is the anti-Christ
that new scientific discovery will lead to something disastrous
that piece of heart-warming good news indicates the start of a global spiritual uplifting
But also, don’t dismiss the human ability to self-fulfill prophecy, in either a good or bad way. If enough people believe we will undergo a spiritual transformation in 2012, and cause it to happen within their selves – who knows what the flow on effects might be?
Conversely, if enough …
Post-2012 Gear: Kyoto Box
If anything good ever comes from the poverty in Africa, it’s the recent ingenious inventions providing self-help at affordable prices. Although the aim is to provide cooking/boiling facilities for the poor, this is a great concept for a post-cataclysm scenario. The parts are easily scavenged, and most people would have the skills to construct a Kyoto Box. Therefore boiling water and cooking food should be easy to achieve for just about anyone.
It might look a bit primitive and simplistic, but it is 400 times more cost effective than photovoltaics – and that’s if you buy one ready made. If you recycle, it’s basically free.
All you need is:
2 cardboard boxes – one a little smaller than the other
a knife
black spray paint
aluminium foil
glue
duct tape
insulation / packing material
In terms of scavenging, a supermarket or hardware store, and a dumpster are about all you’d need to source the above items.
Here’s the official site – …
GPS Failure in 2012?
It wouldn’t be a total catastrophe, but it could certainly cause lots of trouble for transportation systems that rely on GPS, especially passenger airlines.
Existing satellites are ageing, and replacements are behind schedule and over budget, according to a report from the US Government Accountability Office.
Satnavs and other GPS devices calculate their position by comparing time signals from at least four satellites. To keep that many within range at all times requires a fleet of at least 24. For now there are 31 operating, but 13 of them are more than four years past their design lifetime.
The first replacement “block IIF” satellites are not due to launch till November, three years behind schedule, and the GAO predicts a 20 per cent chance that the fleet will drop below 24 at times in 2011 and 2012. That wouldn’t cause GPS to shut down, but its accuracy would drop unpredictably.
And you wouldn’t want …
This one is a real zinger!
Last one, I promise – but this email that arrived today is so, how should I say, representative, I felt it was worth sharing. Back to real news next post.
Hey There! I stumbled upon your site. I had the delight of being one of the officers to pull a group of innocent children out of a doomsday cult 2 years ago. I see that you are thinking that Ben Radford is weak for dismissing 2012 . I think people like yourself really need to wake up. More like, people that are supporting a doomsday, Thats not going to happen as you portray it, are pretty sick, and 99% of us don’t condone your idiotic thoughts on such a pathetic hoax. You may not be a terrible person. But many people thinking like you do, here in America, brain wash people and molest little kids. Prophecies are not science and yes, …
The Little Bacterium That Could
Candidatus Desulforudis audaxviator doesn’t need sunlight, doesn’t even need photosynthesis. Therefore it is not so surprising it was discovered 3 kilometres below the Earth’s surface in a South African goldmine.
Report from New Scientist:
Such a self-sufficient organism is virtually unheard of. It means the ecosystem’s only species must extract everything it needs from an otherwise dead environment.
…Chivian’s analysis shows that the new bacterium gets its energy from the radioactive decay of uranium in the surrounding rocks. It also has genes to extract carbon and nitrogen from its environment – both essential for making proteins.
“It’s philosophically exciting to know that everything necessary for life can be packed into a single genome,” says Chivian. NASA’s Chris McKay says this is just the kind or organism that could survive on Mars.
They fall short of suggesting it may have come from Mars, or elsewhere.
Mysterious Light Pillars from Latvia
Even two leading experts in atmospheric optics can’t quite figure them out: “These pillars are mysterious,” say Les Cowley and Marko Riikonen. “They have unexplained curved tops and even curved arcs coming from their base.
http://spaceweather.com
Light pillars are a known phenomenon, but they usually look like this:
The Cause
———-
Columns of light apparently beaming directly upwards from unshielded (and wastefully polluting) lights are sometimes visible during very cold weather. Plate shaped ice crystals, normally only present in high clouds, float in the air close to the ground and their horizontal facets reflect light back downwards.

Bunker for Sale in UK
Up for auction on Dec 16 is:
A nuclear bunker, with 2ft thick concrete walls and massive steel doors, is set to go under the hammer with a guide price of £240,000- £260,000 at a public sale.
…The site, a redundant Victorian reservoir, was built in countryside near Winchester as a survival pod in the Cold War to withstand a nuclear blast that would wipe out civilisation.
…“This is not your average property, what with blast-proof fittings, a chute for ejecting people in an emergency, air filters and independent power and water supplies.”
If I was planning my 2012 survival in the UK, I’d be very interested. Instead I shall buy a lottery ticket devoted to this bunker, and should I win, use the proceeds to enable some UK 2012ers to use it.
Beringia or Atlantis?
The standard model of New World migration still stands – people left Asia, crossed the Beringia Land Bridge, and populated the Americas as they headed south.
According to National Geographic, DNA sequence studies show:
… humans heading east after leaving Asia about 40,000 years ago were blocked by two huge glaciers that met at present-day Alaska.
With no way forward, the humans settled on the land bridge, called Beringia, that connected Asia and North America.
There they remained for 20,000 years.
It’s a bit of a stretch, but perhaps either:
a) They didn’t stay in Beringia, but established Atlantis insteadb) Beringia is the location of Atlantis
I figure there have been few or none undersea explorations in this area that could reveal an ancient advanced civilization. And Plato’s description of Atlantis kinda fits:
…you might pass to the whole of the opposite continent which surrounded the true ocean …and the surrounding land may be most truly called a …
