Survivalists in Florida

May 19, 2012 – 11:49 pm | 2 Comments

Great article in the Miami New Times last week, profiling preppers and survivalists like these folk:
Jorge Villa – after a terrifying experience during Hurricane Andrew he devised his own bunkers, and sells them to folk – some of whom are worried about the end of the Mayan calendar – via his business U.S. Bunkers
Neal Wiseman – moderates a group called the South Florida Survivalist Network, and has a year’s worth of food stored for his family, should the need arise:

Chris Petrovich – prepper for 25 years. He has helped others “cache extra fuel and food, stashed in public-storage units and underground, at intervals on an 800-to-1,200-mile path out of Florida. Amid darkness and chaos, skirting burning sugarcane fields and accidents and roadblocks, they’ll drive from cache to cache toward a secret inland hiding spot, exhausting the last available remnants of the petroleum age.”
While Petrovich himself plans on staying, I agree with …

NZ Professor – Bent Pyramid Made from Concrete

Professor Ken MacKenzie from the Macdiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology in Wellington, has announced the results of a study that included scientists from the UK and USA. Their findings were released last week at a conference in Japan and published in the journal Materials Letters.
State-of-the-art analytical techniques have enabled them to study the nuclear structure of the casing stone of the Bent Pyramid in Dahshour. The results suggest that the casing stones are artificial, cast from minerals found in the surrounding area. The abstract for the paper says:
A comparison was made of the solid-state 29Si, 27Al and 43Ca MAS NMR spectra of the outer casing stone from Snefru’s Bent Pyramid in Dahshour, Egypt, with two quarry limestones from the area. The NMR results suggest that the casing stones consist of limestone grains from the Tura quarry, cemented with an amorphous calcium-silicate …

Fireproof concrete for bunker construction

Not the most sizzling headline, but may just save you from being sizzled. Ready for public consumption just prior to 2012…
The geopolymer, developed by William Rickard and a team from Curtin University of Technology, can withstand temperatures of over 1600oC for at least an hour – heat that would rip through regular walls.
The super concrete can also defend us from less natural types of fire – its resilience makes it ideal bomb shelter material. In addition to scorching flames, the geopolymer can withstand almost three times more pressure than run-of-the-mill concrete. To put it into perspective, you could stack 8,000 tonnes (that’s about 5,000 Ford Falcons [a large Aussie car]) on a square metre of this stuff and it still wouldn’t crack. There has also been a lot of research to suggest that geopolymers can provide protection from radiation, which will be handy if we ever face nuclear war.
…it will …

Pyramids Made From Concrete

Pyramids Made From Concrete

I’m a partial fan of this idea, because it is such a simple solution that anyone can understand. A new set of researchers are backing the idea the Giza pyramids are made from concrete:
A handful of determined materials scientists are carrying out experiments with crushed limestone and natural binding chemicals – stuff that would have been readily available to ancient Egyptians – designed to show that blocks on the upper reaches of the pyramids may have been cast in place from a slurry poured into wooden moulds.
Unanswered are questions like the quarries where the blocks were cut from… why they made such big blocks… how all the other pyramids on Earth were made… The story is also told at the Boston Globe.
