How Accurate Did Mayans Expect Prophecy To Be?
I find it absolutely extraordinary that out of millions of pages written about 2012, very few have discussed the most logical questions:
Why did they choose Dec 21, 2012 as the end date of the Long Count?
What was the reason for the start date?
What did the Maya believe happened at the end of the last Long Count (hint: humans wiped out)
How important was prophecy to the Maya?
Did their prophecies ever come true?
Was the date provided with prophecies meant to be precise?
It is very easy to map our own ways of thinking onto an ancient culture, and that’s a mistake.
For all we know, a prophetic date might not have been expected (by the ancient Maya) to be accurate. For all we know, give or take a week was acceptable. We simply don’t know.
Regarding today, technically Dec 21 is the start of the new Sun/Age/Era. The end of the last Sun was on …
Pope Benedict: No Doomsday in 2012
For more than a thousand years the Bible has pretty much had a monopoly on apocalyptic prophecy. Today Pope Benedict, head of the Catholic church, has denounced the Mayan doomsday, as well at Biblical prophecy:
During his weekly Angelus address from the window of his Vatican apartments on St Peter’s Square, Benedict spoke of extracts from the Bible that speak of ‘‘the sun and moon going out, the stars falling from the sky’’.
…But Benedict said that Jesus ‘‘does not describe the end of the world, and when he uses apocalyptic images, he is not acting the prophet’’.
That’s called having your cake and eating it too. Like many of his disciples, Benedict is telling us that everything in Bible is literal, true and divinely inspired – except for the parts that we should ignore.
Of course I have some thoughts on this!
The only connection between Biblical and ancient Mayan prophecy is that they …
Tarot and 2012: Scary Connection
2012 keeps on surprising me. I thought I’d seen and heard every angle there could be by now, and this one took me totally by surprise. I’m not new to Tarot – twenty years ago I was giving readings and wearing a Crowley deck Death (above) t-shirt. And I’m not new to the numerological angles of 2012 – especially the 11:11 meme. But until a few days ago I had never heard of this:
Major Arcana
21/12/2012 (or for Americans 12/21/2012)
21: The World
12: The Hanged Man
20: Judgement
12: The Hanged Man
Now you could argue that some other Major Arcana cards would also sound prophetic if their numbers matched up: The Sun (19), The Devil (15), Death (13), Wheel of Fortune (10)… or even The Tower (16) if you have a good understanding of the cards – but the majority of Major Arcana cards don’t have any relationship to a 2012 doomsday. Certainly not cards like The …
