Articles in Galactic Alignment
This particular meme is worthy of a lengthy discussion, for it underlies much of the misinformation surrounding the 2012 phenomenon.
The idea of a galactic alignment was popularized by John Major Jenkins, in books such as Maya Cosmogenesis 2012. The writings of Jenkins are very scholarly, yet have been ignored by most orthodox Mayan experts, possibly because he does not have the appropriate tertiary education. Also, while his arguments are convincing, studies of the ancient Maya involve a lot of interpretation, and opinions on meanings can vary widely.
The ‘Galactic Alignment’ is an astronomical phenomenon that refers to an alignment between the December solstice Sun with the equator of our galaxy, the Milky Way – from a viewpoint on Earth. This alignment occurs as a result of the precession of the equinoxes. Precession is caused by the earth wobbling very slowly on its axis and shifts the position of the equinoxes and …
We can’t see our galactic center properly because of the interstellar dust that is in the way. While it might take a very long time for that dust to move out of the way, it appears that it could just vanish one day.
Dust surrounding a star has disappeared in the space of a year, without any known mechanism causing the disappearance:
“The disappearing act appears to be independent of the star itself, as there is no evidence to suggest that the star zapped the dust with some sort of mega-flare or any other violent event.”
“Nothing like this has ever been seen in the many hundreds of stars that astronomers have studied for dust rings,” Zuckerman said. “This disappearance is remarkably fast, even on a human time scale, much less an astronomical scale. The dust disappearance at TYC 8241 2652 was so bizarre and so quick, initially I figured that our observations …
I don’t know much about our Galactic Center, and scientists don’t know that much more. Here are some concepts that are mostly agreed:
Most galactic centers harbor black holes, and it looks like they probably all do
Those black holes are generally very energetic
The source of the energy is anything that gets sucked in
Our galactic center is very quiet in comparison
Maybe it is just hungry? Well, it is about to be fed:
Scientists have determined a giant gas cloud is on a collision course with the black hole in the center of our galaxy, and the two will be close enough by mid-2013 to provide a unique opportunity to observe how a super massive black hole sucks in material, in real time. This will give astronomers more information on how matter behaves near a black hole.
“The next few years will be really fantastic and exciting because we are probing new territory,” said Reinhard …
The Galactic Alignment was originally promoted by John Major Jenkins, and then it became a mutant meme. So mutated that journalists ask me about the planetary alignment of 2012 (there isn’t one). There’s two ways of looking at:
1. The ancient Mayans cared about the Dark Rift (which is where the galactic center is) and were very accurate at predicting when it would align with the solstice Sun.
2. Some physical or mystical effect will occur due to the alignment.
Regarding the latter, the alignment was at its most aligned in 1998, and nothing has happened. And in terms of physics, the only force that could have any effect is gravity, and the galactic center is too far away to be meaningful. NASA describe this well:
Second, Earth is not within range of strong gravitational effects from the black hole at the center of the galaxy since gravitational effects decrease exponentially the …
Note: This video was removed from YouTube, but has turned up again, so I’ve updated this, and there’s a permanent link to the video as well now.
Although a good portion of my life is dedicated to promoting the need to prepare for the worst in 2012, the amount of misinformation and bad science out there bothers me a lot. Consequently I love it when someone puts time and effort into creating a 2012 video like this one:
It’s well worth watching for anyone who wants to understand what the “galactic alignment” is all about, and what it isn’t.

A new book is out this month, 2012 and the Galactic Center: The Return of the Great Mother. Fortunately for the author and the publisher, most people are not aware that the alignment actually happened in 1998. While I won’t be buying this book, I am curious to know whether Christine R Page lets her readers in on this little secret…
