Great article in the Miami New Times last week, profiling preppers and survivalists like these folk:
Jorge Villa – after a terrifying experience during Hurricane Andrew he devised his own bunkers, and sells them to folk – some of whom are worried about the end of the Mayan calendar – via his business U.S. Bunkers
Neal Wiseman – moderates a group called the South Florida Survivalist Network, and has a year’s worth of food stored for his family, should the need arise:

Chris Petrovich – prepper for 25 years. He has helped others “cache extra fuel and food, stashed in public-storage units and underground, at intervals on an 800-to-1,200-mile path out of Florida. Amid darkness and chaos, skirting burning sugarcane fields and accidents and roadblocks, they’ll drive from cache to cache toward a secret inland hiding spot, exhausting the last available remnants of the petroleum age.”

I was quite OK with the LHC when experts explained that cosmic rays cause the creation of harmless mini-black holes in our atmosphere all the time. Now I don’t know what to think!
Otto Rössler is the professor who sued and failed in his attempt to halt the Large Hadron Collidor. Over at Lifeboat.com he lists 10 solid reasons to be concerned about the LHC. The primary argument is that those mini-black holes in our atmosphere are moving very fast, and will zip through Earth without harming us. A black hole created by the LHC will move slowly, and will eat us up before it departs! He calculates the process will take a few years to reduce our planet to 2cm in diameter – that’s too cosy for my liking!

Planet X & Asteroids – They Will Be Found!

There has a been a lot of talk about how an uncharted asteroid, or even Planet X, could do us harm in 2012. The problem is that these predictions are hard to prove or disprove – we don’t have good enough telescopes.
This is all about to change with the Aug 2007 launch of Pan-STARRS in Hawaii. Over 4x bigger than any other telescope camera, it will photograph three-quarters of our sky by 2010.
Until now roughly 600,000 asteroids have been catalogued. By 2012 that might reach 1 million thanks to the new telescope.
It will also find any new planets that might be out there, having the ability to locate Jupiter-size planets up to 1700AU from the sun, and Pluto-sized planetoids up to 250AU away. As a comparison, Pluto is between 29-49AU from the sun. The director of the operation said “If Nemesis is out there, we will find it”.

Planet X coming in 2012: Norwegian Politician

I’m not buying it, but I’m a cynic by nature. Enjoy!
I am a Norwegian politician. I would like to say that difficult things will happen from the year 2008 till the year 2012.
The Norwegian government is building more and more underground bases and bunkers. When asked, they simply say that it is for the protection of the people of Norway. When I enquire when they are due to be finished, they reply “before 2011”.
Israel is also doing the same and many other countries too.
My proof that what I am saying is true is in the photographs I have sent of myself and all the Prime Ministers and ministers I tend to meet and am acquainted with. They know all of this, but they don’t want to alarm the people or create mass panic.
Planet X is coming, and Norway has begun with storage of food and seeds in the Svalbard area …

(although I don’t believe in it at all, I keep my ears open for any info that might change my mind…)
Just found this:
Futureworld Publishing International is promoting the release of Dr. Jaysen Q. Rand’s new best-selling book, The Return of Planet-X and Its Effects on Mother Earth: A Natural Disaster Survivor’s Manual, his alarming eye-opening tome. Dr. Rand will soon announce he will be joining professional forces with Retired Soviet Air Force Lt. Col. Marina L. Popovitch and the EnergyInformative Division of The Russian Academy Of Sciences, Moscow, Russia. This top-echelon study group will formulate a high-level scientific research effort to either prove or disprove the reality/actuality of the existence of Planet-X (believed to be the Biblical Book of Revelation’s reference to “Wormwood” —Chap. 8, Vrs. 11).
Seeing as he has a (self-published) book to sell, I presume that he’ll prove it is real, but I’ll keep an eye out for …

Dec 21, 2012: The Darkest Day

What if the end date of the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar was not meant to be taken literally?
The first question you need to ask is this: Dec 21 is also the Winter Solstice (in the northern hemisphere) – the darkest day of the year, so it is a coincidence or deliberate?
The second question is, if the date is deliberate, then why?
If there is a scientific basis to the Long Count calendar, if it is ultimately reflecting a scientific prediction, then there are still more questions:

Is there anything about a Winter Solstice than can cause a catastrophe?
Could an ancient culture predict a catastrophe, thousands of years away, accurate to a single day?
Or is Dec 21, 2012 a symbolic date for a scientific prediction for approximately Dec 2012?

What we do know:

The ancient Germanic people celebrated the solstice with Yule logs
The very ancient Newgrange tomb in Ireland is aligned to the winter …

Many Earthquakes Today

I check this web page all the time:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php
It lists every earthquake greater than 5.0 for the last week, and it is updated in real-time.
On most days there’s less than five quakes listed, and often just one or two. Today there are 39!

To be fair, when there’s a really big quake, a lot of aftershocks will make the list – so to account for them the list really looks like this:

Solar Pole Imbalance Mystery

Our Sun operates on a cycle that takes roughly 11 years to complete. While the key indicator for when the cycle is at its peak is the number of sun spots, the root cause is the reversal of the Sun’s magnetic poles. And for some reason that scientists cannot explain, the Sun’s poles are currently out of step with each other:
