Mayaland Resort
There is a massive industry in central America revolving around the end of the ancient Mayan calendar. I find it bizarre that people are inspired to head there for the “end of the world”. If this was an episode of Twilight Zone, they’d all suffer a fate worthy of their petulance.
As an extreme example, there is a resort in Mexico called Mayaland, as in Disneyland. It’s mostly not Mayan in terms of attractions, but there are some touches:
Balankanche: This cavern functioned as a ceremonial center for the ancient Mayas. At the entrance is the throne of Balam, a kind of altar, which gives its name to the caves. In the center of the vault an imposing stalactite, reaching down to the floor resembles a giant Ceiba tree.
Regardless, the point I wish to make is the level of interest in being in the Yucatan peninsula for Dec 2012. Right now you can book accommodation at Mayaland for $69/night. But in late December guess how much more it costs?
Well, I can’ t tell you – it is booked out – but according to The Record it will cost in excess of $1000 per night.
I presume the people who have booked such expensive accommodation are the type who feel superior to ancient prophecy, and they will eat and drink well and sleep deeply. The polar opposite of preppers.
I get denying the possibilities of EOTW situations – it is quite likely that in our lifetime we won’t face one, although in the long term it is inevitable. But why would you head to the source of the prophecy and tempt fate? To me, that is idiotic and stupidly brazen.

Well, one reason for heading to the Yucatan, for many people, would be the hope/ expectation of a ”supernatural” event or experience, usually referred to as ” ascension”or transformation of oneself and the world to another dimension. Its one way of interpreting the intention of the Maya expressed through their calendar etc and seems to be at least as popular as your view that the prophesy foretells some kind of physical catastrophe.
Personally, I would like to be there in case the prediction of the ” Return of the Cosmic Gods”( as per some interpretations of Tortuguero 6 )turns out to be literally true. That would be something to behold. I think its just as likely as catastrophe or ascension and could have the same result as either outcome!
It is “the end of the world.” It’s the end of the 4th world; the beginning of the 5th world. This end of the world business is metaphorical. A lot of people made a lot of money because of this misunderstanding. So if people are celebrating the end of the world, they are correct without being morbid. It’s like celebrating New Year’s Eve. Out with the old, in with the new. Same thing.
