Another Expert Agrees With Dark Comet Theory

Astronomer David Asher (from Armagh University) has agreed with Bill Napier and Janaki Wickramasinghe (Cardiff University) that “dark comets” are real and dangerous.
The following quotes are from a paper by Napier and Asher published in Astronomy & Geophysics.

We know that about one bright comet (of absolute magnitude as bright as 7, comparable to Halley’s Comet) arrives in the visibility zone (perihelion q<5AU, say) each year from the Oort cloud. It seems to be securely established that ~1–2% of these are captured into Halleytype (HT) orbits. The dynamical lifetime of a body in such an orbit can be estimated, from which the expected number of HT comets is perhaps ~3000. The actual number of active HT comets is ~25. This discrepancy of at least two powers of 10 in the expected impact rate from comets as deduced from this theoretical argument on the one hand, and observations on the other, is …

Belize 2012 Festival… with a twist!

Submitted by on August 14, 2012 – 2:17 pmNo Comment

If you haven’t come across KickStarter yet, the concept is simple – people pledge $$ towards a project. If it reaches its funding goal, the project goes ahead, they take your money, and you get a predetermined gift or product. Sometimes it works amazingly well. I’ve actually helped fund movies and books, in return for a copy and sometimes my name in the credits – it’s a rewarding feeling.

I can’t see this one taking off, but make up your own mind:

  • $412 per person for a Dec 21 celebration 3-day festival in Belize
  • After the festival, everyone owns a share of the 54-acres of waterfront property

i propose three days of festival – december 20th 21st and 22nd. on 54 acres of incredible land. global music. artists. performers. speakers. filmmakers. comedians. bonfires and laughter under the moon. ceremony at cerros maya temple site.

and here is the best part. after the festival you will own this land. always.

Full details at Kickstarter.

The chap behind it is a friend of prominent 2012er Daniel Pinchbeck. And the problem I have is that nothing is concrete. Not a single performer mentioned. If he is capable of putting a festival together, I’d expect that some acts would already be booked, subject to the festival proceeding. It all sounds too idealistic and not much else. But I’d love to see it happen, of course.

UPDATE – the Kickstarter campaign has been suspended – no reason provided. Looks like it won’t be going ahead unless they find alternate funding.
