If you consider pyramids to be super-bunkers…
For some time I have been convinced that some of the world’s largest pyramids were designed primarily to be bunkers. By starting with this premise, and asking questions about the Great Pyramid of Giza, I hope to demonstrate how (to me) it is a possibility:
Why is it so big?
I can think of many reasons:
- Regardless of what you are defending against, bigger will always be more protective. They may not have known what they would be facing, only that it would be bad
- If it has a double purpose of warning future generations, bigger will last longer
- If the threat is radiation (or cosmic rays), then the thickness of the walls provide exponentially better protection
- It is harder for others to find their way in, if they don’t know where the entrance is – bigger pyramids make entrance location more difficult
What is the purpose of the Subterranean Chamber?
The unfinished nature of this part of the interior has baffled experts. Perhaps it is due to the nature of its function – waste. Any long-term bunker stay will generate waste products. The inhabitants will need a place to dump their leftover food, go to the bathroom, or even bury their dead. This low room, far from the other rooms, would be an ideal spot.
What about the air shafts?
Perhaps, instead of the idea that these crooked shafts were intended to align with stars, they were indeed just air shafts? My private bunker will have multiple air shafts, in case someone on the outside decides to block them. There will be some obvious ones, and some hidden ones.
The two shafts of the Queen’s Chamber have hogged the limelight in recent years – due to Rudolf Gantenbrink’s discovery of a door at top of one of them – and it is easy to forget that the shafts of the King’s Chamber actually connect the chamber with the outside of the pyramid, like a proper air shaft should. And today the shafts are have been fitted with fans and actually used for ventilation!
What is the Well Shaft for?
It could be a laundry chute. I’m serious. Pyramid experts will tell you that reaching the Subterranean Chamber from the King’s or Queen’s Chamber is hard work. Why not just chuck your refuse down the chute?
Who would the bunker occupants be?
The kings who commanded the construction, and their few associates. The size of the internal rooms suggest only a dozen or so people, so it was only intended for the king’s nearest and dearest. It’s quite possible that they were not native Egyptians, and that their kingship was a means to an end – the pyramid bunker.
Is there any evidence of bunker purpose?
No. The pyramid was found to be pretty much empty in modern times. Foodstuffs were probably removed when the predicted event didn’t occur. More precious items would have been kept close at hand, instead of in the bunker – a “go bag” if you will. The lack of dead pharaohs is evidence that suggests the pyramids were not used as tombs. Pharaohs died, but the lack of a cataclysm at that time almost validates why there is no evidence for bunker use – it wasn’t used as planned.
Then why is the tomb idea so popular?
Well, if you are commanding tens of thousands of people to build a giant bunker, and they are compliant because you have some kind of power, or X factor, which would be more productive – telling them it is a private bunker and everyone else will die, or telling them that it is a tomb that will help your almighty leader ascend to a higher plane so as to continue his benevolent rule? Historians often neglect to consider that people may have lied in the past.
Why didn’t they just find a cave to survive in – it would have been easier?
Why don’t you live in a cave?
Why the pyramid shape?
If they were expecting the radiation or cosmic rays to arrive directly from above, then angles of the pyramid sides would deflect the rays from the room in the very center of the pyramid – the Queen’s Chamber. In fact anything would be deflected, from rain and snow to dust and ash. This is why houses have pitched roofs. This could also explain why the entrance is not at the base of the pyramid.
Why a King’s Chamber and a Queen’s Chamber?
Here’s an original thought… the Queen’s chamber is directly below the apex of the pyramid – it’s in the middle. But the King’s chamber is offset. Why would it not be in alignment? I’m sure there are plenty of engineering reasons that one could come up with. And perhaps some esoteric ones. But I’ve not see any.
Perhaps the offset nature of the two pyramids represents the previous physical North Pole and the current one. It has often been speculated that the pyramid represents Planet Earth, so perhaps the chambers are meant to help us work out where the previous North pole is/was?
My full story, with lots more reasoning is at Pyramid = Bunker.
Just to reiterate – the Great Pyramid has the thickest walls in existence – there is almost 100 metres of stone between the King’s Chamber and the sky! And thick walls are a key feature of a bunker.

I think waaaaaaaaaay too much thought has gone into (although
magnificent)these falling apart ancient structures. Personally,I
think it was all about ego. What an incredible power trip, enslaving
some group of people (I now hear it was not the Jews)but actually
there have been egocentric people since the beginning of time.
The pyramid of Giza housed machinery of some type. Read the book: The GIZA Power Plant by Dunn.
The shaft was dug in order to free an ancient renegade, Marduk. You can read about it from ancient cuniform texts transcribed by Z. Sitchen (and his father) in the book series called the EARTH CHRONICLES.
These giant structures are built so incredibly well, milimetric precission, phenomenal architecture. Some stones weight over 60 tons. We don’t know how they were built, but it is impossible that they were built by slaves woth ropes. Far too advanced to be build just as a tomb I think. The giant pyramid will stand more than 10,000 years from now. The idea was to withstand any circumstances, to store knowledge or to keep the important people safe from anything. Or maybe it was used to serve some kind of technology that we don’t know anymore.
