Farewell Thumb Knuckle / Prepper Declared Insane

February 22, 2012 – 9:41 am | No Comment

Doomsday Preppers (currently screening on NatGeo in the USA) is reality TV, so of course it includes some drama. And what happened to Tim Ralston certainly wasn’t scripted:

Meanwhile, David Sarti, who also appeared on the show, has been declared insane. Yet it might all come down to his SHTF beliefs.
He visited a cardiologist and after refusing treatment ended up being kept in a psychiatric unit for evaluation – seemingly because the cardiologist felt Sarti was suicidal. You’d like to think a cardiologist wouldn’t be allowed to make such a call! Sarti was consequently released, with no further action taken, except for one very cruel twist: due to his brief stay at a psych facility, he has been deemed by the Tennessee state to be mentally defective and unfit to own a gun. Yet he is a survivalist… ironic.
Here’s Sarti telling his story:

In the second video he makes it clear that …

My 2012 Bucket List

The popular Bucket List meme is wholly appropriate to 2012 and achieving goals within your limited (perceived) remaining time. Just as 2012 is a great excuse to prepare for the great array of potential catastrophes, it also gives one license to get things done. Here’s an idea of what my list would encompass:

  • Visit the ancient monuments of the world – especially pyramids. Bizarrely the only pyramid I have seen is one of the least known (in Samoa). Like many things on this list, family and work take priority – I simply can’t disappear for 3 months. And as a responsible parent, visiting Egypt right now would not be wise… but Xian, China could work, maybe a quick week?
  • Streak. I’m nudist-curious and have dabbled. Combined with my love of alternative music, the Meredith Gift is local and achievable.
  • Record an album, utilizing modern backing track technology, casks of wine and Auto-Tune. A good opportunity to let out my 2012 angst.
  • Tour my book/ideas to small venues.
  • Instigate a survivalism conference – there haven’t been enough of these, and one with a 2012 angle could go down well.
  • Visit places of importance in my genealogy.
  • Climb a mountain / visit Nepal or Tibet.
  • See Julian Cope live.
  • Immerse myself in Japan for a week.
  • Witness an eclipse.
  • Feel a (harmless) earthquake.
  • Have a pint and meal at the The Old Forge, Britain’s remotest pub, after walking there.
  • Be in close contact with gorillas/elephants/penguins for a while – or some other cool species that isn’t so obvious!
  • Visit second cousins I am barely aware of…
  • Traverse the Amazon, or the Darién Gap.
  • Walk a long way…

But of course your interest in my list will be slight, if at all – it is YOUR LIST that matters. In a post-SHTF world, what are the things you would like to share with youngsters? What stories and anecdotes would best suit the situation? What are the positive aspects of today’s world that you would miss? It’s worthy of contemplation.
