6.6M Earthquake in Papua New Guinea
This is the first 6.5+ earthquake in 30 days, highlighting how the average of every 6 days doesn’t mean they will be evenly spaced, they can occur in bunches, or be absent for quite some time.
The U.S. Geological Survey says a 6.6-magnitude quake struck Thursday just off the island of New Britain. It was at a depth of 13 miles (22 kilometers).
The quake comes just 5 hours after the lunar eclipse – strong earthquakes are up to twice as likely to occur around lunar eclipses. Hopefully if a larger quake occurs in the next day or so, it doesn’t harm anyone.
