The Winged Warriors of Ek’ Balam

I came across this image on Facebook via Korinna and others… at Wikipedia they are described as “winged warriors“.The wall is found at the ancient Mayan site Ek’ Balam.

Winged beings were regularly depicted in the past, and a recent episode of Ancient Aliens was devoted to a possible extraterrestrial connection. Of more interest to me is that these particular beings have elongated skulls, something found in mysterious places like the Nazca Lines and in the remains of Egyptian pharaohs like Tutankhamen. In my opinion, regardless of whether they were genetic or created, such heads belonged to mysterious elders who were behind the construction of many ancient monuments worldwide.

@kirsten: I am suggesting that it was used by the pyramid building elite, that their culture was global. This could be a path to finding out who they were. Other instances could be coincidence or copycat. Did you read this part?
Reasons
Cranial deformation was probably performed to signify group affiliation (Gerszten and Gerszten, 1995; Hoshower et al., 1995; Tubbs, Salter, and Oaks, 2006), or to demonstrate social status. This may have played a key role in Egyptian and Mayan societies. Queen Nefertiti is often depicted with what may be an elongated skull, as is King Tutankhamen (Gerszten and Gerszten, 1995).
I was fortunate to visit a museum in Ica (Peru) – not too far from Nazca, where we saw many mummified and skeletal elongated heads. I definately agree with the social status theory in that the larger head, the more intellegent /important the person was deemed to be. If i recall correctly, these were created by tightly binding the head with bandages over many years.
I too enjoyed the coneheads decades ago on Saturday Night Live.
