Lunar Eclipses Are Dangerous Times
I’ve just been through the tedious task of checking every lunar and solar eclipse since 1973 ( as far back as the USGS records reliably go), against every earthquake measuring 6.5, 7.0, 7.5 and 8.0 in magnitude. For solar eclipses the odds of an earthquake were slightly higher than average, but not enough to raise alarm bells.
Lunar eclipses do have an effect. I looked at total and partial lunar eclipses, and compared them to average earthquake rates, from Jan 1973 until the present:
M6.5+ … normal is an average of one every 8.4 days
Within four days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 7.26 days
Within one day of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 5.87 days
M7.5+ … normal is an average of one every 73.8 days
Within twenty days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 51.6 days
Within four days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 41.25 days
Within one day of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 33 days*
Of course these numbers do not mean that there will be an earthquake every time there is a lunar eclipse. But it does mean that a large earthquake is roughly 50% more likely to occur, and a M7.5+ perhaps more than twice as likely to occur within one day. Therefore the gravitational tug-of-war, with the Sun pulling us from one direction, and the moon from the diametrically opposite direction, was a factor. If the constantly moving magnetic fields were also a factor, and could be used to predict a mega-quake in 2012, then far longer time-frames would need to be looked at, which we don’t have. But an advanced ancient culture could conceivably have had such data, if they only counted the very largest quakes, but over millennia.
The next lunar eclipses are:
- June 15, 2001
- December 10, 2011
- June 4, 2012
- November 28, 2012
*With five 7.5M+ quakes occurring within a day of a lunar eclipse, we would need more data, from a longer time period, for this to be statistically significant.
Were the earthquakes predominantly before or after the eclipse?
The only discernible pattern is that quakes occur more frequently the closer you get to the eclipse. Until one day either side, which seem to have as many as the day itself. To get an absolute answer I’d need comprehensive pre-1973 data. I only looked at dates, not hours of the day – it could be that more occur within 36 hours than 48 hours, but with the higher magnitude quakes wouldn’t be significant statistically. And I would love to look at quake locations relative to the directions of the Sun and Moon.
The moon was closer in the past. It has been documented in the Indus Valley that we may have been living in civilized communities for 2-5 million years. Seeing the moon is moving away at an inch per year, it means the moon may have been a thousand miles closer at a time when ancient cultures started noticing and monitoring eclipses. This may be why stone circles were erected – we know they were eclipse calculators, and these would have been efficient warning systems.

earthquakes are before the eclipse.mainly day before the are in mass.need moving bunker.chch n.z eclipse has alot of power due to build up then release 2012 well be mostly unliveable with these eclipses they were only get worse as the year gets on.think of disasters 3 times greater then 2011 what we well have.anoth to make supervolcano blow in several parts of world lake taupo well blow,yellowstone and canarie islands.3 all it takes.fact people please wake up
