Revolution (TV): A Disappointment
The premise was both interesting and extremely timely: a world without electricity*. The TV series could have gone in any extreme direction, but unfortunately it seems to be going nowhere. The lack of electricity is not meaningful in the slightest.
On the positive side:
- interesting characters
- interesting actors (great to see the range of Giancarlo Esposito)
- nice fictionalization of a The World Without Us
But really it is just a generic dystopian future crossed with (perhaps) some mythological stories. It’s lack of originality could be described as:
- Lost, without depth of character
- Falling Skies, without aliens
- Walking Dead, without zombies
- Mad Max, without poverty or Mel Gibson or car chases
- Hunger Games, without romance
- Survivors, without despair
I could go on. If it was set immediately after the lack of electricity it could have been interesting, but by setting in 15 years in the future it might as well been called Robin Hood.
I’ll still watch it – it is well made, exciting and dramatic. But I seriously doubt it will prompt anyone to save food and water. I don’t think anyone will manage to get the message out to everyone 🙁
*The most likely 2012 disaster is a power grid going down for months.
