After numerous serious and blockbuster films about the apocalypse, some of which were certainly a result of the 2012 meme, here come the comedies. Of course they were probably written and filmed prior to last December, but it wasn’t unusual to expect the Mayan doomsday to be a flop. And now that it has flopped, it is time to let out a sigh of relief and laugh a little.<\/p>\n

Last year we had Seeking a Friend for the End of the World<\/em><\/strong>, and now there are three more on the horizon:<\/p>\n

This Is The End<\/em><\/strong> opens this week, and has the stars:\u00a0 James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen. Six Hollywood friends survive and philosophize, read a review<\/a> that gives it high marks. I can’t see it being a hit – because without CGI and action and romances etc, where’s the appeal?<\/p>\n

Rapture-Palooza<\/strong><\/em> was released last week, but perhaps most people will see it on DVD or cable. An IMDB reviewer<\/a> gives us the plot and it sounds terrible\/amateur:<\/p>\n

The story: the rapture is finally there. Lindsey (Anna Kendrick) and her boyfriend Ben ( John Francis Daley) are non- believers so they remain on earth. The Anti-Christ (Craig Robinson) settles in Seattle (of all places) and wants to have sex with Lindsey. So Ben and Lindsey set up a plan to take him down. In the end God (Ken Jeong) shows up and get’s into a fight with the Anti Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
In August we get what will probably be the best of the three, given that it stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, The World’s End<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again… As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
It sounds like a remake of Shaun of the Dead<\/em>, and that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Also, back in the 90s when I lived in Edinburgh, when I first heard of the Mayan end date, my regular drinking haunt was a pub called The World’s End. It was 20 meters from my front door.<\/p>\n
