We don’t actually know if the Mayans were indicating the solstice, or whether it is just a coincidence.

My gut feeling is that the day they chose, being the shortest day, and therefore the darkest and most ominous, is just symbolic.

For a long time I have stated that 6 months either side of Dec 21 should be considered the danger zone, the period in which the terrible event was actually predicted to occur. They might have done this to save face if they were a few days or months out. Still, after 5000 years that would be incredibly accurate, regardless of which catastrophe they were predicting.

I’m going to be on TV again tomorrow saying how relieved I am that the world (as we know it) didn’t end.
