But that doesn&#8217;t mean the East Coast is immune. And to make things worse, because they aren&#8217;t expecting a tsunami, they won&#8217;t be prepared when one arrives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/survive2012.com\/news\/?attachment_id=4426\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4426\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4426\" title=\"tsunami_evac\" src=\"http:\/\/survive2012.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/tsunami_evac.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/survive2012.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/tsunami_evac.jpg 530w, http:\/\/survive2012.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/tsunami_evac-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To be fair, most of the threats are negligible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Puerto Rico Trench &#8211; it is a subduction zone, but it is the Caribbean that is at risk, not the USA<\/li>\n<li>Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault, off the coast of Portugal &#8211; it destroyed Lisbon in 1755, but the USA wasn&#8217;t affected<\/li>\n<li>Cumbre Vieja (Canary Islands) &#8211; a 2001 study suggested this series of events could send a 70-foot (21 m) wave crashing into the East Coast, but other studies since have decided it would only reach a height of a couple of feet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The biggest risk is from a submarine landslide near the U.S. coast. The resultant tsunami would dissipate quite quickly, so the landslide would need to be near a populated area. Experts are still in the process of mapping where these risks lie.<\/p>\n<p>Completely missing from the <em>Mother Nature Network<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnn.com\/earth-matters\/wilderness-resources\/stories\/east-coast-faces-variety-of-tsunami-threats\">article<\/a> is the risk from asteroids and comets.
