I’m not talking ordinary solar storms. I’m talking a once-in-every-40-thousand-years solar storm. That’s something we have no written record of, and given how little we know about our Sun, it is quite possible that it is capable of sending such a super-massive solar storm our way when it feels like it.<\/p>\n

So, if a super-massive solar storm – say ten times more powerful than the Carrington Event – could one day occur, could it be powerful enough to flip our magnetic poles?<\/p>\n

That’s a question for a physicist, not me. But I did find these two snippets:<\/p>\n

It is conceivable that a very large cosmic ray barrage could induce a ring current magnetic field large enough to reverse the geomagnetic polarity at the Earth’s surface. Particle -induced field reversals have been simulated in the laboratory by injecting large quantities of charged particles into a magnetic field (Golden et al., 1981). At a certain point the field built up by the trapped ions becomes sufficient to produce a toroidal “field reversed ion ring” having a net reversed field polarity in its interior. In a similar fashion, the opposing field generated by the radiation belt ring current could reverse the field polarity at the Earth’s surface. During a sufficiently prolonged event this external perturbation could reorient the Earth’s core\u00a0 dynamo causing a geomagnetic flip.

Normally our magnetic field does a good job of diverting charged particles away from the surface and into the van Allen radiation belts (although some charged particles always manage to funnel in along magnetic field lines at the north and south magnetic poles) but it can only do so much. A large cloud of gas from a powerful solar flare can overwhelm the Earth\u2019s magnetic field, driving charged particles into the atmosphere to not only produce intense aurorae (the Northern and Southern lights) but also causing the magnetic field to flutter under the electromagnetic stress.

Paul LaViolette thinks it is possible, and orthodox science tells us that ordinary solar storms cause our magnetic field to flutter. Because we don’t know what causes geomagnetic reversals, a super-massive solar storm could be the trigger for a reversal, even if it doesn’t have sufficient oomph to flip it on its own.<\/p>\n

Forty-thousand years ago such a storm, aside from some extraordinary auroral displays, would have gone unnoticed. But we are starting to realize that geomagnetic reversals could happen that frequently<\/a>. It might have caused mutations and even evolution but the humans and animals would be unaware.
