An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/07\/16\/golden-mummies-what-happe_n_1677919.html\">article at the Huffington Post<\/a>\u00a0looks into what happened to Hawass since (not much, seems like he is sitting around hoping to be reinstated&#8230;), and it provides some other interesting info:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tourism revenue in Egypt dropped by a third to $8.8 billion in 2011, and industry observers say the damage has been much worse.<\/li>\n<li>Occupancy rates in Luxor have dropped as low as 4%, down from an average 61%, and beach resort Sharm el Sheik\u2019s rate has dropped from 70% to 8%.<\/li>\n<li>The Building and Development Party, which won 13 seats in the 2011 election is the political wing of the El Gama\u2019a El Islamiyya movement. In 1997, it claimed responsibility for a terrorist attack on foreigners in Luxor where 48 tourists died.<\/li>\n<li>The Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s official news site has promised \u00a0to invest $20 billion in the tourism industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a new Minister of Antiquities, but I can&#8217;t even find a photo of him. If Egypt wants their tourism industry to rebound, reinstating Zahi Hawass will not only give them a proven performer, but a familiar face will ease the fears of potential visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt is cheap right now, and given that tourism is Egypt&#8217;s number one source of income, the new Muslim leaders will look after tourists.
