And there’s still time for another somewhere.

Such large quakes occur on average every 25 days, so a four day window means each time the sequence extends, the odds of it coming true are 1 in 6. To be extended 4 times means the odds of it happening are 6x6x6x6 or 1 in 1296!

Skeptic site Common Sense Conspiracy suggests that these types of patterns are easily found, but to me it seems uncanny, so what could be the cause?

Well, they all occur on either a full moon or new moon. I’ve previously shown that (statistically) eclipses increase the likelihood of major quakes, so it makes sense that times when we almost have eclipses (full and new moon) are also a factor.

Comet Elenin has been cited as the influence. Elenin-Sun-Earth alignments accounted for the first two quakes listed, but none of the others. This makes sense, because cometary alignments won’t fit nicely into a 188-day pattern within one return. However, the Electric Universe crowd have suggested that plasma interactions between the Sun, Comet and Planets could cause earthquakes!

Supposedly William Gaspar has a theory involving Cygnus placed near the Galactic Centre that is double the 188 day cycle with 377 days…

My best guess:

Sun/Moon/Earth alignments have a causative effect on terrestrial earthquakes

They are strongest with the finest alignments – eclipses

For some reason, the effect goes through phases

We are entering a new phase of great effect

Such a pattern could have been noted by a long-lasting ancient civilization in an earthquake-prone region (or if they had a global monitoring system)

Next up, Sept 25, 2012.

I’m actually on vacation (my last for perhaps a very long time…), so I’ve not been able to fully investigate this, but here goes:
Chile — February 27, 2010 — 8.8-magnitude
New Zealand — September 4, 2010 — 7.1-magnitude
Japan — March 11, 2011 — 9.1-magnitude
Fiji — September 15, 2011 — 7.2-magnitude

The dates fall between 186 and 190 days apart.
