The media keep providing us with a variety of SHTF scenarios, to the point that most people will have seen at least one TV show or movie that let&#8217;s them know how bad things can get. Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reality TV<\/strong>: <em>The Colony<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Documentaries<\/strong>: <em>Doomsday Preppers<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Movies<\/strong>: <em>The Road<\/em>, <em>The Book of Eli<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>TV Dramas<\/strong>: <em>Jericho, Survivors<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, some quick lessons learned from Falling Skies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have military folk in your group, they will take charge<\/li>\n<li>Get some walkie talkies (for some reason the show&#8217;s writers didn&#8217;t give them any&#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>Have a doctor in your group<\/li>\n<li>Have a safe spot away from the city &#8211; in the alien invasion scenario, people in remote areas would probably be left alone<\/li>\n<li>Know where large stores of supplies are, for example distribution centers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The last point is worthy of expanding upon. Obviously supermarkets will be stripped bare when the SHTF. But the suppliers to the supermarkets will have stock on hand &#8211; especially in this era of <em>just-in-time<\/em> inventories. If any such places exist near your safe spot, now is the the time to locate them and make notes. If there is a medical supply company nearby, the time to raid it is the day the SHTF, before anybody else thinks of it. Obviously I&#8217;m talking about theft that could get you in trouble. Categories to consider<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Medical supplies<\/li>\n<li>Weapons<\/li>\n<li>Consumables<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor supplies<\/li>\n<li>Hunting and fishing<\/li>\n<li>Canned goods<\/li>\n<li>Building equipment<\/li>\n<li>Generators \/ solar power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Approach the task from multiple angles &#8211; Yellow Pages, Google Maps, driving around and noting down the business names of warehouses and then doing a web search to see what they do.<\/p>\n<p>The less well-known the business, the less likely it will be raided.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I really enjoyed the first two episodes of the TV series Falling Skies.
