For solar eclipses the odds of an earthquake were slightly higher than average, but not enough to raise alarm bells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lunar eclipses do have an effect.<\/strong> I looked at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lunar_eclipses\">total and partial lunar eclipses<\/a>, and compared them to average earthquake rates, from Jan 1973 until the present:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>M6.5+<\/strong><\/span> &#8230; normal is an average of one every 8.4 days<br \/>\nWithin four days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 7.26 days<br \/>\nWithin one day of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 5.87 days<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>M7.5+<\/strong><\/span> &#8230; normal is an average of one every 73.8 days<br \/>\nWithin twenty days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 51.6 days<br \/>\nWithin four days of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 41.25 days<br \/>\nWithin one day of a lunar eclipse, averages one every 33 days*<\/p>\n<p>Of course these numbers do not mean that there will be an earthquake every time there is a lunar eclipse. But it does mean that a large earthquake is roughly 50% more likely to occur, and a M7.5+ perhaps more than twice as likely to occur within one day. Therefore the gravitational tug-of-war, with the Sun pulling us from one direction, and the moon from the diametrically opposite direction, was a factor. If the constantly moving magnetic fields were also a factor, and could be used to predict a mega-quake in 2012, then far longer time-frames would need to be looked at, which we don&#8217;t have. But an advanced ancient culture could conceivably have had such data, if they only counted the very largest quakes, but over millennia.<\/p>\n<p>The next lunar eclipses are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>June 15, 2001<\/li>\n<li>December 10, 2011<\/li>\n<li>June 4, 2012<\/li>\n<li>November 28, 2012<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*With five 7.5M+ quakes occurring within a day of a lunar eclipse, we would need more data, from a longer time period, for this to be statistically significant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve just been through the tedious task of checking every lunar and solar eclipse since 1973 ( as far back as the USGS records reliably go), against every earthquake measuring 6.5, 7.0, 7.5 and 8.0 in magnitude.
