SWAT Team Storms Private Bunker

May 10, 2012 – 1:39 pm | 3 Comments

The anti-survivalist actions of some authorities in the USA are getting much worse. In recent times we have seen the malicious use of zoning laws to thwart survival plans, and we have seen many of things survivalists do listed as suspicious (in a terrorism way). This most recent news is of special concern for anyone who has a private bunker:
After getting dressed Mr. Del Rio went and opened his front door. He was immediately bum rushed by the Austin Police Department’s SWAT Team and then detained and interrogated for over 10 hours.
His crime: on his property was an old Cold War bunker that Mr. Del Rio had converted into a workshop.
You’d think the interrogation would have been enough punishment, but unfortunately the authorities:

fenced off his home and prohibited him from entering the residence
filled in his entire basement and bunker with 264 tons of concrete
sent him a bill for $90,000 in …

Land Rover DC100

Land Rover DC100

Over at USA Today they are telling us that this new Land Rover model should appeal to survivalists:
With its rooftop equipment rack, you can stow hundreds of cans of Spam and canned peas topside, leaving the cargo area for your stash of glinting yellow gold bullion. As giant chasms split open before you, you can count on the winch to deliver you from a sure, quick demise. Best of all, the DC100 has a snorkel so it can be driven in deep water. Land Rover even came up with something called “Wade Aid” with sonar sensors on the bumper and side mirrors to measure water depth. When it senses that you have sounded the dive alarm and are headed for deep water, it automatically closes vents, raises the ride height and puts the vehicle into low gear.
I think the question of …

Holly Deyo on Changing Countries

Holly Deyo on Changing Countries

Survivalists often discuss which countries would be safest to be in, should a global cataclysm occur. Typically the focus is on the lack of danger – no volcanoes, inland, no nuclear power plants… Less discussed is whether you can handle the more mundane aspects of living somewhere new, and leaving your old life behind.

Holly Deyo is the author of the very excellent Dare To Prepare! (buy it, even if the weight makes it expensive to deliver…), and she knows what she is talking about in her article describing her 5+ years in Perth, Australia.
That’s right – Australia. Not like Lesotho as Patrick Geryl suggests, or parts of Brazil that I mention in my book, Survive 2012: Safe Spots. There are strong reasons for not moving to countries where the culture is quite different to your own. Not only might you struggle pre-SHTF, after a catastrophe you might lack the skills to …

Many Earthquakes Today

Many Earthquakes Today

I check this web page all the time:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php
It lists every earthquake greater than 5.0 for the last week, and it is updated in real-time.
On most days there’s less than five quakes listed, and often just one or two. Today there are 39!

To be fair, when there’s a really big quake, a lot of aftershocks will make the list – so to account for them the list really looks like this:
8.6 OFF THE WEST COAST OF NORTHERN SUMATRA
8.2 OFF THE WEST COAST OF NORTHERN SUMATRA (+ 22 aftershocks)
6.0 NORTH INDIAN OCEAN (+ 9 aftershocks)
5.3 BANDA SEA
5.5 ANDREANOF ISLANDS, ALEUTIAN IS., ALASKA
5.1 SOUTHERN MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE
5.2 SOUTHERN MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE
5.4 SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS REGION
5.9 OFF THE COAST OF OREGON
6.5 MICHOACAN, MEXICO
I’ve definitely not seen such an array of large quakes in one day before. Hopefully it’s just a freak occurrence.
UPDATE: Very next day, GULF OF CALIFORNIA has had a 6.9 and a 6.2, while …

Astrophysicists: Crab Pulsar is Ultra-Powerful

It amazes me how contradictory orthodox scientists can collectively be. When discussing the future of our planet, they typically regard their current understandings to be certainties that are set in stone. A good example is that we are not close enough to any potential supernova for harm to come to us. But that’s not fact, that’s an opinion based on a very short period of observations. So while I hear cosmic doomsday scenarios being dismissed all the time, I also come across many instances where scientists admit they have a lot to learn.

The pulsar at the centre of the famous Crab Nebula is a veritable bundle of energy. This was now confirmed by the two MAGIC  Telescopes on the Canary island of La Palma. They observed the pulsar in the very high energy gamma radiation from 25 up to 400 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), a region that was previously …

Natural Gas Worse Than Coal

Natural Gas Worse Than Coal

You already know this, but diets high in meat contribute to global warming. That’s because cows fart methane.
By burping, belching and excreting copious amounts of methane — a greenhouse gas that traps 20 times more heat than carbon dioxide — India’s livestock of roughly 485 million (including sheep and goats) contributes more to global warming than the vehicles the animals obstruct. [Source: Time, April 2009]
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) agriculture is responsible for 18% of the total release of greenhouse gases world-wide (this is more than the whole transportation sector). [Source: Time for Change, 2008]
All that methane might be causing temperatures to rise. One of the solutions, being embraced all over the world, is to use natural gas instead of burning coal. Germany, for example, expects to replace nuclear energy with that from natural gas. But as New Scientist …

2012ers: New Age v. Preppers v. Rapture

2012ers: New Age v. Preppers v. Rapture

OK, fess up – if you believe in 2012 to any degree then you are one of the above. You might be a mix of two or even all three, but one will be where your core 2012ism comes from.
One of the easiest ways to determine your key aspect is to ask yourself how you will react if a massive EOTW event does not occur on Dec 21 2012:
New Age – typically you will claim any good news or miracle (like a lost dog finding its owner). Most likely you have already spotted indications of the changes ahead. A lack of a major event this December won’t matter, for you will say that the change has just begun – but it might take a while. Your positivity will be continual.
Prepper – 2012 is an excuse to step up your preparations. If nothing happens, no matter – you know deep down …

Japan Updates Tsunami Predictions

Japan Updates Tsunami Predictions

In 2003 the Japan government’s expert panel on tsunamis predicted the maximum height of any tsunami created by an earthquake to be 20 meters. In wake of last year’s disaster they have changed their evaluation, and the new worst-case scenario is a 35-meter wave. Tokyo could be hit by 20-meter+ waves, and the Hamaoka nuclear plant could face 21-meter waves – which means they should look into extending the height of their 18-meter high breakwater currently under construction.
The panel noted that the projection was for “the worst possible tsunami” and the “chance of its occurrence is extremely low”.

Second Solar Storm Detector Launching in 2014

Second Solar Storm Detector Launching in 2014

Better late than never!
In my recent article on the incredible harm a solar storm could inflict on infrastructure, I pointed out that we only have a single line of defense, and the solar storms it detects could kill it:
When warning us about incoming geomagnetic storms, the NOAA’s only source of data is the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite. It was launched in 1997, and according the the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2009, it is “well beyond its planned operational life”. I take this to mean it could fail any time, and there is no backup satellite! And all current safety measures become redundant – we won’t be able to remove vulnerable equipment from the grid before it is too late. “ACE is a single point of failure and it’s old,” said William Murtagh, program coordinator for NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction …

$20 Million Steel Arks

$20 Million Steel Arks

In my opinion, it went something like this:

A few authors suggest a global cataclysm could occur in 2012
Patrick Geryl says a good way of surviving would be unsinkable yachts
Roland Emmerich makes the movie 2012, using many of Geryl’s ideas. He replaces yachts with massive steel arks
Hardened Structures starts making steel arks for clients

One of those real arks is pictured above. For $20 million you get a 900 ton steel ship that can hold 180 people and has supplies that will last for five years. this isn’t someone’s daydream, this is a genuine survival ark that (hopefully) will be used if a massive tsunami strikes where it is situated.

Here Come The Homonids

Here Come The Homonids

I had previously anticipated (in mid-2010) that more human ancestors and cousins would turn up:
Based on recent discoveries, I wouldn’t be surprised if 6-10 human species are determined to have lived in the last 50,000 years – and I reckon an additional species for the last 10,000 years is quite likely.
http://survive2012.com/news/2010/07/siberia-hominin-530.html
Finding human fossils is a difficult task, and many species (if not widespread and long-lasting) would probably avoid being fossilized. So for every discovered species, there’s going to many more of which there is no record.
Newly discovered:
The fossilized remains of a partial foot has led scientists to speculate that there were several species of pre-humans living in Africa at the same time.
A team from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History discovered the eight bones from an unknown species of hominid in the central Afar region of Ethiopia.
…”On the one hand the foot has a …

2012 Solar Storm = Long-Term Power Blackout

2012 Solar Storm = Long-Term Power Blackout

Lawrence E Joesph, Patrick Geryl and myself would probably be the 2012 catastrophists that have reached the most people. Something we all proclaim is that our Sun is the most likely source of a 2012 disaster:

Geryl: convoluted math and ancient texts prove that a 2012 disaster is certain
Joseph: science says a new Carrington event is kinda due, and 2012 has religious aspects as well
Bast: observations by ancients of auroras at low latitudes could have predicted a 2012 solar storm

We each understand that a solar storm could wipe out power grids and potentially melt down nuclear facilities, leading to many millions of lost lives. That late 2012/ early 2013 is probably the peak of this solar cycle fits well with all three theories. Aside from the “2012 is the year” aspect, many key bodies agree with us:

NASA: “NASA has warned that a peak in the sun’s magnetic energy cycle and …

Fermi Bubbles – Proof of Galactic Core Explosion?

These two things are certain:

Nothing has completely eradicated life on Earth (so far)
Natural catastrophes may vary in size, type and location – but they always repeat

An explosion from our Galactic Core is certainly survivable, although you might need a bunker and supplies to last decades… Paul LaViolette explains such explosions in his books, especially Earth Under Fire. When asked for a prediction regarding the next explosion, he says:
A conservative guess would be that there is a 90% chance that a superwave will arrive in the next four centuries.  I cannot rule out the possibility that one might arrive around the time of the Mayan calendar end date of 2012, as some proclaim.
Since he wrote Earth Under Fire, the Fermi telescope has been looking for “extremely short wavelengths on the far end of the electromagnetic spectrum”. And when they are mapped we get this:

Remarkably, not far from Mexico City, just two minutes after the drill commenced there was a 7.4 earthquake. Either this was a massive coincidence, or the drill was planned to occur at the same time as …

Australia: Biggest Quake in 15 Years

Australia: Biggest Quake in 15 Years

As reported by news.com.au:
The earthquake’s epicentre was recorded at shallow depth near Ernabella, 415km north west of Coober Pedy and about 320km south west of Alice Springs, just before 8pm.
Geoscience Australia reported the quake could have been felt by people up to 500km away and damage experienced within a 40km radius of the epicentre.
…The earthquake was the most powerful in Australia since a 6.3 magnitude quake off Collier Bay, on Western Australia’s north coast, on August 10, 1997.
I figure it almost makes a case for the 188-day earthquake cycle – it was just outside the predicted days, and it wasn’t the biggest of quakes, but for Australia it was huge. Keep in mind that unlike Japan / NZ / Chile etc, the middle of Australia is the middle of a tectonic plate, not the edge.

Homeland Security Tracking Preppers?

Homeland Security Tracking Preppers?

Survivalist and Prepper websites have been reporting that the Department of Homeland Security has been paying them a visit – for example Off Grid Survival:

So of course I went and checked some of my sites, here are the totals since Jan 1, 2011:
2012 Connect   16
2012 Base    21
Survive 2012    237
That makes sense because the last site contains this blog, so there’s lots more new content to look at. I’m both proud and scared that they find my writing interesting. So I checked DOD and the Navy as well:

Click on the images for a closer look, but there were also 427 visits from the Department of Defence, and 716 from the Navy Network Information Center. Interestingly, the average page views and time spent on the site were extremely similar to DHS. And the spikes in visits correlated with spikes in general – they visited more on days the site …
