Galactic Centre to Erupt in 2013
At the heart of every galaxy there is thought to be a supermassive black hole. Our black hole is known as Sagittarius A*, and as far as these go, it is very quiet. But that could change in 2013 when a “suicidal gas cloud” gets sucked into it, causing the release of a lot of radiation. This is the first time I have heard of such an event in our galaxy, so it is interesting that they predict it to occur so close to 2012.
The kilo-electronvolt X-ray emission of Sgr A* may brighten significantly when the cloud reaches pericentre. There may also be a giant radiation flare several years from now if the cloud breaks up and its fragments feed gas into the central accretion zone. [Nature]
Since Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) first started observing Sgr A* in 1992 they have seen just two stars come close to the event horizon (an amazing 40 billion kilometers from the centre), but neither were sucked in. So this event will be a real first.
“When we look at the black holes in the centers of other galaxies, we see them get bright and then fade, but we never know what is actually happening,” said Eliot Quataert, a theoretical astrophysicist and University of California, Berkeley professor of astronomy. “This is an unprecedented opportunity to obtain unique observations and insight into the processes that go on as gas falls into a black hole, heats up and emits light. It’s a neat window onto a black hole that’s actually capturing gas as it spirals in.”
There is some activity at the black hole:
For several years, NASA’s Chandra spacecraft has detected X-ray flares about once a day coming from our galaxy’s central black hole, which is known as Sagittarius A* (Sgr A* for short). These flares may be caused by asteroids falling into the supermassive black hole’s maw, according to the study.
Although we didn’t have the instruments back then, X-ray echoes have scientists thinking that roughly 100 years ago the output of Sgr A* brightened by a factor of a million, probably due to it swallowing a planet.

40 billion kilometers from center…That thing is 80,000,000,000 meters across!! ‘Eats planets for breakfast…”can’t do a thing about it , it’s family..’Good lord that sounds to close to home..’ANYWAY!
WOW! every time I open a new science page it’s more fuel to the fact We are so infinitely helpless and floating along all “blissful” in a manner not even representational of a ‘supposed conscious collective of “7 billion individual entities . “INDIVIDUALS”! and scope of personal perspective of coarse are the 2 tenets that keep that axiom in place for seeing and agreeing on the apparent corporeality at hand for all; but the physicist and science geeks to a disproportionately large extent, what a shame ..Travesty! that humans don’t come equipped with a small knowledge at least of the fact We live in a unfathomably large cosmos and we are on a voyage in a mine field of 10 teraparcec involvement.
This little arrangement of a 4,000,000,000 solar mass singularity consuming a energetic gas plasma cloud could create a collimated microwave beam like a Macro ~ M.A.S.E.R ! (joy) That “accretion disc is the size of a solar system..We haven’t witnessed the real Mc Coy yet , as far as seeing a real feeding frenzy such as a star consumption in the neighborhood .
Still waiting for that star wars sunset ! if the red giant ‘Beatlejuice” if You will ,I keep getting the red line HERE! on “Beltagese” or how ever? goes super nova ..that is ! but that’s another thread and I have already digressed enough for one session..Namasta’
Think I left out a few zero’s in the 80 billion ? {80,000,000,000,000} meters @ the beginning of my 1st paragraph..I guess I don’t write checks that big very often..then again congress does and they make similar sized blunders as a rule ..so I don,t feel so bad..’however… “I care’…
Yah I know I was right the 1st time, #rd pair of P/C specs..damn..I’m beginning to sound “Schizophrenic” and ‘So am I….me too.
