Survivalists in Florida

Great article in the Miami New Times last week, profiling preppers and survivalists like these folk:
Jorge Villa – after a terrifying experience during Hurricane Andrew he devised his own bunkers, and sells them to folk – some of whom are worried about the end of the Mayan calendar – via his business U.S. Bunkers
Neal Wiseman – moderates a group called the South Florida Survivalist Network, and has a year’s worth of food stored for his family, should the need arise:

Chris Petrovich – prepper for 25 years. He has helped others “cache extra fuel and food, stashed in public-storage units and underground, at intervals on an 800-to-1,200-mile path out of Florida. Amid darkness and chaos, skirting burning sugarcane fields and accidents and roadblocks, they’ll drive from cache to cache toward a secret inland hiding spot, exhausting the last available remnants of the petroleum age.”
While Petrovich himself plans on staying, I agree with …

Post-2012 Gear: Adjustable Specs

Submitted by Robert Bast on January 1, 2010 – 1:50 pm4 Comments

I think in Australia the number of adults needing spectacles/contacts/laser is about 50%, which means for those like me who haven’t dared have laser surgery yet, after a 2012 cataclysm our contacts and specs will be very, very important to keep safe. Once they are gone/damaged, replacing them might be impossible.

Whether they are for personal use, or trade/barter, stocking up on adjustable specs might be a smart move. That’s right, adjustable:

They consist of clear membranes filled with silicon oil, protected by plastic discs. The wearer can adjust the amount of oil in the lenses using a dial fitted to a syringe on the arms of the glasses. Changing the amount of oil in the lenses changes their curvature, which alters their strength.

When someone has adjusted the lenses to suit their vision, the lenses are sealed with a valve and the syringes removed, giving near-instant glasses with no need for an optometrist.

30,000 of these have been distributed in Africa, with a manufacturing cost of $19 each. They aren’t pretty, but they are pretty cheap. A box of these would be a good investment for any bunker. Story at CNN. Official site is the Centre for Vision in the Developing World

Thank You for leaving taking your time to blog about all this 2012 information, I am 19 and live in Oklahoma, USA and after watching the movie 2012 it has really grabbed my concern about what might happen. I am still learning and catching up on all your post. What I am concerned about even if we know this is going to happen how will we survive if it is anything like the movie, waves came crashing in the ground crumbled beneath there feet, if that is true there isn't a chance for us normal people right? Do you think the government might have something ready?

    Thanks!

hey Kyle, In my opinion, There won’t be a government for the people anymore, ”They” ither won’t exists, or ”They” Will be tring help themseves or people of a value. This would be a good time to buy a bow, and learn to use it and arrowsmithing maybe a good thing start as well. Great for Hunting and great for a simple srealthy defensive and offensive encounters. Maybe groups of people, armed an unarmed will seek anything the desire or need with the slightest care for what would have ben law and order. Learn to hit moving targets! This web site and a few more have a good advice on this subject.
