Caves Discovered in Easter Island

Once again, an ancient mysterious site has been found to be associated with the underground:
A team of experts recently discovered a six-kilometer-long lava cave system on Easter Island thought to have been used as a refuge by the island’s inhabitants during the 16th century. The team confirmed it is the largest cave on the island and the 11th-largest in the world in terms of area.
So many possibilities!
  • The "Long Ears", while on Easter Island, instinctively sought out somewhere underground to hide
  • The "Long Ears" stayed on Easter Island because of the caves
  • Caves are everywhere, and it is just a coincidence
  • The "Long Ears" created, or at least augmented, the caves
Worldwide, at locations historically known as "the navel of the world", people have headed underground, or created massive buildings to shelter in.

Stegomastadon: Another Unexplained Extinction

Not that I've tried to catalog all the extinctions from the cataclysm of 12,000 years ago (or so), because I've already seen enough evidence to convince me. However, until today I was not aware of this extinct beastie:

The stegomastodon... is a prehistoric mammal that looks like a stronger version of the modern elephant. It lived in the Andes region approximately 13,000 years ago.

...Scientists from the Universidad Austral rushed to the site (La Plata) to look for more fossils, and soon discovered remains of other prehistoric species. The concentration of the remains suggests the possibility that there was a human settlement close-by. Convinced they may have another Monte Verde on their hands, researchers are urging officials to classify the zone as an official archeological site.

Mario Pino, a geologist from the Universidad Austral, explained in an interview to La Nación that "it is very unusual that three distinct species of mammals would have died naturally in such a small sector."

“It could be the product of human activity," he added.

Some scientists are still fixated on the "millions of animals, dozens of species, became extinct at the same time, because we ate them all" theory.

Or, similarly, we have the La Brea tar pits, which has the remains of 100,000 birds (138 species, 19 of which are extinct), 700 sabre-tooth tigers, and wolf skulls that average twenty per cubic yard. Because all these stupid animals supposedly got stuck in the asphalt. Oh yeah, and 3 species of fish!

22 Doomsday Scenarios for 2012

This week I updated my list of possible doom'n'gloom scenarios that we might face in 2012, ie the end of the world in 2012. I've ranked them according to probability & predictability. Here's the top 5:

1. Asteroid/Meteor/Comet (watch out for my article on this, that names the culprit!)
2. Coronal Mass Ejection
3. Magnetic Pole Shift
4. Cosmic Superwave
5. Religious Apocalypse (yep, this list lacks any personal bias...)

Andrew Collins Discovers Giza Cave?

It depends on who you ask, as to whether this is a legit discovery, or just an old cave that has been studied previously.

Andrew Collins: Claims to have rediscovered a cave system under the Giza plateau, from studying the writings of Henry Salt from the 19th century. The angle Collins is taking for his new book "Beneath the Pyramids" (published this week) seems to be that the pyramid complex was inspired in some way by the cave system.

Zahi Hawass: "There are no new discoveries to be made at Giza. We know everything about the plateau," he stated.

Andrew Collins: "To the best of our knowledge nothing has ever been written or recorded about these caves since Salt's explorations. If Hawass does have any report related to these caves, we have yet to see it."

Personally, as much as I am a fan of Andrew Collins, I find it hard to believe that there is anything left to discover at Giza, that can be seen from the surface, as this cave entrance appears to be.

Sensible Survivalism

While I read many blogs & sites devoted to survivalism, it's not too often I feel compelled to share what I find. Today is one of those rarities, a short, readable, intelligent look into the underlying skills a modern-day survivalist requires -written by a blogger with a blog called Hegemonicon. It doesn't focus on things like hunting skills...

He starts off by mentioning what I have been preaching for almost a decade: 2012 doesn't need to be a dead cert, it's OK to prepare for the worst, just in case. You don't expect your house to ever burn down, but most sensible people have their home insured against fire:
But the idea of preparing for a low-probability, high-cost event isn’t so strange - we pay for fire insurance, after all. Survivalism is just insurance of a different sort.
Here are his 6 principles, and my comments regarding how they might relate to 2012 preparations:

Prepare for Disasters in Proportion to Their Likelihood.
You are far more likely to die of a heart attack or car crash... Agreed. Wear a seat belt, don't drink and drive, watch your diet, exercise. These are survivalist tactics. Don't marry an axe wielding maniac. Don't sleep in gutters. Don't fly in a small plane during bad weather.

Think Like an Economist
"And having one or two guns is probably a good investment. But each additional gun is less useful than that first one, because the number of situations where you’ll need that many guns at once gets lower and lower.... Remember, you have limited resources - spend them where they’ll have the most impact." Approaching 2012, you also have limited time. If you devote 3 years of your life to surviving 2012, and it fails to eventuate, would that then be a waste of 3-5% of your life? The trick is to find a way of having your survivalist tendencies and eat your cake too. Choose a bunker/basement that suits your normal lifestyle. Like wine? Get a house with a wine cellar, and in 2013, convert it back to a wine cellar. Like being self-sufficient? Use 2012 as an excuse to move to the country and grow your own food.

Train Your Brain
"The ability to think rationally, creatively, and strategically - to analyze a situation and come up with the best possible solution, is a useful skill in every possible situation you will face." Play violent video games. Hunt at your supermarket. Test your peripheral vision when in crowded environments. Crosswords/Sudoku. Pretend you are 90-years-old and you want to stay mentally active. Attend a Murder Mystery Weekend. Play paintball.

Favor Skills Over Objects
I'll just quote this one in full, it is so good:

The future is uncertain - that’s the entire point of survivalism. Your preparations should take this uncertainty into account. You don’t know if you’re going to be able to get to your stockpile, or have enough gas to drive to your hideout, or trade your gold bars to anyone. Any item used for survival is also a liability, by virtue of the fact that you’re depending on it. Objects can be taken away from you, and if society really does break down, they probably will be. Skills on the other hand, are inside your head - you can’t lose them unless you forget them. So it’s more useful to learn to farm, or hunt, or fish, or gather, than to stockpile. It’s better to learn how to build a shelter than to have a bunker. It’s better to know how to fix a car than to spend thousands turning one into your survival-mobile. The more skills you have, the more you’ll be able to turn any situation to your advantage.
You are Not Legend
"Society may collapse, but people will still be around. You should plan to deal with them." Get out more. Be at a bar at 3am and have arguments. Join the parent's committee of your kids school. Get a job where you deal with the public. Join a political organisation. Get used to dealing with people.

You are Going to Die.
It is a fact. It is why few elderly folk can be found who care about 2012. Why put effort into surviving 2012 if you are close to meeting your maker anyway? By questioning your real motivation for surviving 2012, you might just learn something about yourself... Is it really for your kids, or fellow humans? Then maybe you can help out in other ways, here and now....

Post-2012 Leader Contest from Sony

Adding to their promotions for the blockbuster movie 2012, to be released on November 13, is a contest starting today that is looking for someone to rule the post-2012 world. It's not for real, of course - the winner actually receives a trip for two to Cancun in Mexico. Twelve runners-up each get a Playstation 3.

Finalists will be decided on how well they score in 4 contests each week, and it runs for four weeks, for a total of 16 online tests. Contestants can improve their score a little by having advocates - basically a vote from a fellow contestant. If you follow this link you can vote for me :)

Otherwise, just head over to TheIHC.com for more info.

Giant Lions Roamed Britain 13,000 Years Ago

In North America, lions 25% bigger than the African lions of today, lived just 13,000 years ago. DNA analysis had helped scientists determine that another breed of large lion (5-10% larger than today), known as cave lions, were also living in the UK at that time, just before the global cataclysm that wiped out many large mammal species.
About 13,000 years ago these species died out in a mass extinction. Figuring out the reason behind this, Dr Barnett said, was one of the last great scientific mysteries.

He said: "There are a couple of different schools of thought. It could have been climate change or something to do with humans. Humans could have been killing off their prey or killing the lions themselves.

"The extinction is a big question that remains unresolved. More research and more advanced genetic analysis may help answer it."

DIY Bunker - Not So Difficult After All?

The thing about bunkers and survival shelters is that anything is better than nothing (unless your design causes a cave-in or suffocation...)

Here's a great example of how all you need is a little time, a little cash, some basic skills and a backyard:
  • $500 for an old fuel tank
  • a hole to sit it in
  • pile some dirt on top, add a retaining wall
  • install a door and steps
  • accessorize!

FIXED: 2012 Debunked - Excellent Video

Note: This video was removed from YouTube, but has turned up again, so I've updated this, and there's a permanent link to the video as well now.

Although a good portion of my life is dedicated to promoting the need to prepare for the worst in 2012, the amount of misinformation and bad science out there bothers me a lot. Consequently I love it when someone puts time and effort into creating a 2012 video like this one:

It's well worth watching for anyone who wants to understand what the "galactic alignment" is all about, and what it isn't.
