Survivalists in Florida

May 19, 2012 – 11:49 pm | One Comment

Great article in the Miami New Times last week, profiling preppers and survivalists like these folk:
Jorge Villa – after a terrifying experience during Hurricane Andrew he devised his own bunkers, and sells them to folk – some of whom are worried about the end of the Mayan calendar – via his business U.S. Bunkers
Neal Wiseman – moderates a group called the South Florida Survivalist Network, and has a year’s worth of food stored for his family, should the need arise:

Chris Petrovich – prepper for 25 years. He has helped others “cache extra fuel and food, stashed in public-storage units and underground, at intervals on an 800-to-1,200-mile path out of Florida. Amid darkness and chaos, skirting burning sugarcane fields and accidents and roadblocks, they’ll drive from cache to cache toward a secret inland hiding spot, exhausting the last available remnants of the petroleum age.”
While Petrovich himself plans on staying, I agree with …

Snake Grows a Leg!

Snake Grows a Leg!

Occasionally snakes have two heads, but this mutation is quite unique, and eerily appropriate with 2012 approaching. 2012 is the Chinese Year of the Dragon, and possibly the return of Quetzalcoatl (“feathered serpent” = dragon) for the Maya. Here we have a snake that has grown a leg. Source: The Telegraph

Merry Xmas – Three Years To Go

Christmas is a great time for re-assessing what is most important in life. We (adults) might notice how little we care for presents, and how much we appreciate the family and friends who we spend the festive season with. We get to have some time away from the 9 to 5 job, a short burst of freedom from the daily grind. Unless you are the one doing all the cooking
This week also reminds us that there are only three years remaining until the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar – whatever that will mean. For me personally, it is a kick up the backside. Like a mid-life crisis, I am getting the feeling that time is running out, and if I am going to make a bigger effort, it needs to start right now.
If you get a chance, and the weather is nice, go for a drive. …

eBook review: The Ultimate 2012ology Secret Guide

Written by Manjit Sareen, the “Ultimate 2012ology Secret Guide” is good overview of 2012 for anyone who is new to the topic – perhaps the 2012 movie was the first they had heard of it. The first of three major chapters is an overview of all the pertinent prophecies for 2012, the 2012 era, and the end of the world. It includes the usual suspects, plus prophecies not commonly associated with 2012 such as the Sybylline Prophecies, William Blake and those of the Maori.

Following this are some indicators of what is presently wrong with the world (economy, health, environment…) that we can all relate to, and then details of how we can prepare for 2012.

The suggested preparations are strictly New Age, there’s no mention of bunkers or long-life food products. Information includes The Law of Attraction, chakras and green living.

I can recommend this eBook for anyone after a quick …

As did Toba, so could Yellowstone

As did Toba, so could Yellowstone

A study has provided “incontrovertible evidence” that the eruption of super-volcano Toba 73,000 years ago destroyed forests throughout central India, at a distance of 3,000 miles from the the island of Sumatra where Toba is located.
The volcano ejected an estimated 800 cubic kilometers of ash to Earth’s atmosphere (Mt St Helens in 1980 was 1.3 cubic kilometres), creating an “Instant Ice Age” that, as evidenced by Greenland ice cores, lasted approximately 1,800 years.
During this time “temperatures dropped by as much as 16 degrees centigrade (28 degrees Fahrenheit)”. The effect on existing populations would have been devastating, and is a possible cause for the population “bottleneck” we find from genetic evidence.
This is the type of disaster that could be just around the corner, if Yellowstone is really showing signs of unrest. Not only would a large portion of the USA be wiped out, but we’d also have a massive drop in …

Bunker Guidelines for Victoria, Australia

Bunker Guidelines for Victoria, Australia

Sorry for a post with only value to my local area – but for us here it is important.
As horrible as last year’s bush fires were, on the bright side they have given rise to people wishing to do more to protect themselves. The current trend is one that dovetails in well with 2012ers – a bunker. Obviously a fire bunker is not as sophisticated as what a 2012er might build – you are unlikely to be in a fire bunker more than a couple of hours, and all it needs to withstand is fire.
Highlighting the new trend (and it’s real, a close friend has just installed a fire bunker), the Victorian Government has released interim guidelines [PDF] that cover safety standards for bushfire bunkers.
Anyone wishing to install a bunker will need to get a building permit from a surveyor, as well as the approval of a qualified fire engineer. …

Mystery: 67 Dinosaurs in 1 Quarry

Mystery: 67 Dinosaurs in 1 Quarry

The quarry being discussed is located west of Arches National Park (Moab, Utah). It “contains dinosaurs of all sizes and ages, indicating a massive die-off event”. Because the location is near the shore of an ancient lake bed, scientists believe a drought was the cause (they were all after the remaining drops of water). The reason it is being discussed – most of the fractured bones were “angled ‘greenstick’ fractures that occur in fresh bones”.
So far the researchers have identified 67 individual dinosaurs representing 8 species – and they have only scratched the surface of this diverse quarry. Mysteriously, nearly all of the 4,200 bones recovered so far are fractured, as reported in the scientific journal Palaeo.
‘Although enough bones were recovered to assemble several complete dinosaurs, the vast majority of bones are broken to bits and pieces, just pulverized,’ said BYU professor Brooks Britt, lead author on the study.

Given that …
