Apocalyptic Entertainment Cranks Up A Notch

November 11th, 2009 by Rob | Posted under Uncategorized.

Here’s some evidence that whichever way you work it, Hollywood is giving us what we are into, or writers are feeling the vibe, the “end of the world” is really, deeply, seriously in vogue:

Len Wiseman (Underworld, Die Hard 4.0), has in development – “Nocturne” which centers on a handful of survivors following a wide-scale apocalyptic event and how each of them arrived at their current dilemma.

2013 TV Series - Roland Emmerich (producer of the current 2012 movie) is involved in a tv show that will focus on the survivors of a 2012 doomsday, and he suggests it will appeal to the same niche audience as Lost.

A documentary series is in development for the History Channel, with a title of Seekers 2012. A reality show, it will be very much based on the X Files concept:

Ideal Investigators would already be a team (husband and wife, co-workers) who fall somewhere between the FBI Agents on “The X Files” and “Indiana Jones”. One is a believer, the other a skeptic. One is driven by reason, science and empirical evidence, the other by feelings, intuitions and faith.

Ideally, the woman would be the skeptic and the man the believer.

Opinions I have read suggest that there will be significantly more applicants for the “Mulder” role.

Cormac McCarthy’s The Road is now a movie, and the story starts like this:

The world is in ruins after an apocalyptic event that is never described. A father and his son are walking south in an attempt to escape the increasingly cold, endless winter. Along the way they have to avoid gangs of lawless killers. Their only weapon is a pistol with 2 bullets.

And that’s just a sample…

Don't forget the upcoming film 'The Book of Eli'. A post apocalyptic adventure about a mystical text that will fix the ruined world.

And then there are the Nickelodeon's film 2012 and also 2012 War for Souls supposedly in the offings.

Then there is my film '2012 – One Man and a cheap Digital Camera'.

It's going to be fascinating how the media will deal with the superficial aspects of 2012 – but you have to wonder just how deep they will really get. What do you think?

    2012 – A Scientific Reality Check
    11.10.09

The Galileo spacecraft's view of the Moon and Earth On December 16, 1992, 8 days after its encounter with Earth, the Galileo spacecraft looked back from a distance of about 6.2 million kilometers (3.9 million miles) to capture this remarkable view of the Moon in orbit about Earth. Image credit: NASA/JPL There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there… So here is the scientific reality on the celestial happenings in the year 2012.

Nibiru, a purported large object headed toward Earth, simply put – does not exist. There is no credible evidence – telescopic or otherwise – for this object's existence. There is also no evidence of any kind for its gravitational affects upon bodies in our solar system.

I do however like the name Nibiru. If I ever get a pet goldflish (and I just may do that sometime in early 2013), Nibiru will be at the top of my list.

The Mayan calendar does not end in December 2012. Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period, but then – just as your calendar begins again on January 1 – another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

There are no credible predictions for worrisome astronomical events in 2012. The activity of the sun is cyclical with a period of roughly 11 years and the time of the next solar maximum is predicted to occur in the period 2010 – 2012. However, the Earth routinely experiences these periods of increased solar activity – for eons – without worrisome effects. The Earth’s magnetic field, which deflects charged particles from the sun, does reverse polarity on time scales of about 400,000 years but there is no evidence that a reversal, which takes thousands of years to occur, will begin in 2012. Even if this several thousand year-long magnetic field reversal were to begin, that would not affect the Earth’s rotation nor would it affect the direction of the Earth’s rotation axis… only Superman can do that.

The only important gravitational tugs experienced by the Earth are due to the moon and sun. There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and Sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

The predictions of doomsday or dramatic changes on December 21, 2012 are all false. Incorrect doomsday predictions have taken place several times in each of the past several centuries. Readers should bear in mind what Carl Sagan noted several years ago; "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, the burden of proof is on the people making these claims. Where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and all the passionate, persistent and profitable assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Read the accounts from survivors of past fly-bys in the Kolbrin Bible! Talk about intense!

The only shelter that will save somebody will be one built away from global flooding, lined with rubber to avoid electro magnetic electrocution, 10 years of food storage, ample oxygen tanks, a heat source, clean water, ear plugs, sun glasses for welding…need I go on?
    GOD BLESS HUMAN KIND!

Great Movie; but I can't believe they didn't get the most important facts right. It's yellowstone's super volcano that that blows every 640,000 years. The astrological alignment happens every 26,000 years. Since the movie was basically about the alignment you'ld think they would have gotten that part right.

Perfect example of the big-budget Hollywood CGI driven spectacle, and completely failing in the story and content department. Instead of spending all their money on special effects they should have paid for more research in the writing department, 2012 is NOT the apocalypse. As an anthropologist I have spent many years researching the world's mythology and theories surrounding the date of 2012. What were are experience, and what world mythos have portrayed, is an expansion in human consciousness, the world is changing, not ending.

I looking forward to the day when Hollywood remembers that it moved from the first film studio in NJ to the beautiful hills of Hollywood to have the perfect environment to CREATE stories. Hollywood needs to awaken to this task start writing new material and quit regurgitating story.

There is nothing to worry my friend. All the ancient cultures only predict a "Golden Age" beginning around 2012, which off-course will be preceded by some catastrophes. Please don't buy into fear & become fearful, for even death can't kill you. I found this site excellent for learning the positive side of 2012
Fear not, for fear itself will kill you. Rather Love :)
