Stegomastadon: Another Unexplained Extinction

Not that I've tried to catalog all the extinctions from the cataclysm of 12,000 years ago (or so), because I've already seen enough evidence to convince me. However, until today I was not aware of this extinct beastie:

The stegomastodon... is a prehistoric mammal that looks like a stronger version of the modern elephant. It lived in the Andes region approximately 13,000 years ago.

...Scientists from the Universidad Austral rushed to the site (La Plata) to look for more fossils, and soon discovered remains of other prehistoric species. The concentration of the remains suggests the possibility that there was a human settlement close-by. Convinced they may have another Monte Verde on their hands, researchers are urging officials to classify the zone as an official archeological site.

Mario Pino, a geologist from the Universidad Austral, explained in an interview to La Nación that "it is very unusual that three distinct species of mammals would have died naturally in such a small sector."

“It could be the product of human activity," he added.

Some scientists are still fixated on the "millions of animals, dozens of species, became extinct at the same time, because we ate them all" theory.

Or, similarly, we have the La Brea tar pits, which has the remains of 100,000 birds (138 species, 19 of which are extinct), 700 sabre-tooth tigers, and wolf skulls that average twenty per cubic yard. Because all these stupid animals supposedly got stuck in the asphalt. Oh yeah, and 3 species of fish!

Really enjoyed your blog.
I don't think a global cataclysm approx. 13,000 years ago could have been caused by humans unless they were as advanced technologically as we are now & we are missing some key stuff in the archaeological records. A friend of mine thinks we blew ourselves up, but wouldn't there be traces? There are references in historical records that mention an advanced race from outside the main continents, a sea-traveling folk left over from a more advanced world traveling all over the world post-cataclysm & introducing advanced concepts to primitive cultures, but honestly - nuclear or atomic capability? Hard to believe. Even if they utilized geo-thermal energy, don't think they could cause global catastrophe. After watching the film "Knowing" & doing some background study on the type of solar flare portrayed. it's not likely anything would have survived since the atmosphere basically burned up as well as everything & everyone else. Pole reversal is an interesting concept. but would it be so catastrophic? The fact that Yellowstone has been identified as one of the globe's 6 or more super volcanoes & the lava pocket under is expanding or changing enough to alter the landscape leads me to vote for the super volcano scenario as the likely cause of the next global tragedy. Scientists estimate the last t1me one blew only 10,000 approx. humans survived. If it wiped out that many humans, wouldn't it be reasonable to assume it would wipe out the fauna too? Unfortunately, it is estimated that the last one blew some 200,000-250,000+ years ago & doesn't explain your unexplained extinction, unless other volcanoes have blown, ejecting poisonous gases which entered the world's air streams & made it around the world in less than 80 days. Would have taken out many fauna & surface fish species. Any way to check the geological records? Theoretically it would be possible to survive super volcano blast &/or poisonous fumes/gases in caves away from near area of eruption or in area last to be affected or skipped by poisons in air streams. Legendary advanced race is rumored to have come from Antarctica, which is wild considering the present ice cover, but who really knows. Could someone survive in say-Alaska or other part of Artic Circle, since it is my understanding that the air currents basically flow from northern to southern hemispheres & a blast in northern USA would theoretically fan out slightly then move around & down the planet or was "On The Beach" off on this one? Would make Antartica the last stop as well. Meteorite hit a good possibility since effects would be similar to volcano blast, but can the craters be carbon dated to fit the time frame? Or do they care enough to date these? Would have to be a big one to affect around the globe & could be crater is underwater. Ah, to have witnessed such an event & lived to tell about it.
