Survivalists in Florida

May 19, 2012 – 11:49 pm | One Comment

Great article in the Miami New Times last week, profiling preppers and survivalists like these folk:
Jorge Villa – after a terrifying experience during Hurricane Andrew he devised his own bunkers, and sells them to folk – some of whom are worried about the end of the Mayan calendar – via his business U.S. Bunkers
Neal Wiseman – moderates a group called the South Florida Survivalist Network, and has a year’s worth of food stored for his family, should the need arise:

Chris Petrovich – prepper for 25 years. He has helped others “cache extra fuel and food, stashed in public-storage units and underground, at intervals on an 800-to-1,200-mile path out of Florida. Amid darkness and chaos, skirting burning sugarcane fields and accidents and roadblocks, they’ll drive from cache to cache toward a secret inland hiding spot, exhausting the last available remnants of the petroleum age.”
While Petrovich himself plans on staying, I agree with …

Caves Discovered in Easter Island

Caves Discovered in Easter Island

Once again, an ancient mysterious site has been found to be associated with the underground:
A team of experts recently discovered a six-kilometer-long lava cave system on Easter Island thought to have been used as a refuge by the island’s inhabitants during the 16th century. The team confirmed it is the largest cave on the island and the 11th-largest in the world in terms of area.
So many possibilities!

The “Long Ears”, while on Easter Island, instinctively sought out somewhere underground to hide
The “Long Ears” stayed on Easter Island because of the caves
Caves are everywhere, and it is just a coincidence
The “Long Ears” created, or at least augmented, the caves

Worldwide, at locations historically known as “the navel of the world”, people have headed underground, or created massive buildings to shelter in.

Stegomastadon: Another Unexplained Extinction

Stegomastadon: Another Unexplained Extinction

Not that I’ve tried to catalog all the extinctions from the cataclysm of 12,000 years ago (or so), because I’ve already seen enough evidence to convince me. However, until today I was not aware of this extinct beastie:

The stegomastodon… is a prehistoric mammal that looks like a stronger version of the modern elephant. It lived in the Andes region approximately 13,000 years ago.
…Scientists from the Universidad Austral rushed to the site (La Plata) to look for more fossils, and soon discovered remains of other prehistoric species. The concentration of the remains suggests the possibility that there was a human settlement close-by. Convinced they may have another Monte Verde on their hands, researchers are urging officials to classify the zone as an official archeological site.
Mario Pino, a geologist from the Universidad Austral, explained in an interview to La Nación that “it is very unusual that three distinct species of mammals would …

1. Asteroid/Meteor/Comet (watch out for my article on this, that names the culprit!)2. Coronal Mass Ejection3. Magnetic Pole Shift4. Cosmic Superwave5. Religious Apocalypse (yep, this list lacks any personal bias…)

Andrew Collins Discovers Giza Cave?

Andrew Collins Discovers Giza Cave?

It depends on who you ask, as to whether this is a legit discovery, or just an old cave that has been studied previously.
Andrew Collins: Claims to have rediscovered a cave system under the Giza plateau, from studying the writings of Henry Salt from the 19th century. The angle Collins is taking for his new book “Beneath the Pyramids” (published this week) seems to be that the pyramid complex was inspired in some way by the cave system.
Zahi Hawass: “There are no new discoveries to be made at Giza. We know everything about the plateau,” he stated.
Andrew Collins: “To the best of our knowledge nothing has ever been written or recorded about these caves since Salt’s explorations. If Hawass does have any report related to these caves, we have yet to see it.”
Personally, as much as I am a fan of Andrew Collins, I find it hard to believe that …

Sensible Survivalism

Sensible Survivalism

While I read many blogs & sites devoted to survivalism, it’s not too often I feel compelled to share what I find. Today is one of those rarities, a short, readable, intelligent look into the underlying skills a modern-day survivalist requires -written by a blogger with a blog called Hegemonicon. It doesn’t focus on things like hunting skills…
He starts off by mentioning what I have been preaching for almost a decade: 2012 doesn’t need to be a dead cert, it’s OK to prepare for the worst, just in case. You don’t expect your house to ever burn down, but most sensible people have their home insured against fire:
But the idea of preparing for a low-probability, high-cost event isn’t so strange – we pay for fire insurance, after all. Survivalism is just insurance of a different sort.
Here are his 6 principles, and my comments regarding how they might relate to …

Post-2012 Leader Contest from Sony

Adding to their promotions for the blockbuster movie 2012, to be released on November 13, is a contest starting today that is looking for someone to rule the post-2012 world. It’s not for real, of course – the winner actually receives a trip for two to Cancun in Mexico. Twelve runners-up each get a Playstation 3.
Finalists will be decided on how well they score in 4 contests each week, and it runs for four weeks, for a total of 16 online tests. Contestants can improve their score a little by having advocates – basically a vote from a fellow contestant. If you follow this link you can vote for me

Giant Lions Roamed Britain 13,000 Years Ago

Giant Lions Roamed Britain 13,000 Years Ago

In North America, lions 25% bigger than the African lions of today, lived just 13,000 years ago. DNA analysis had helped scientists determine that another breed of large lion (5-10% larger than today), known as cave lions, were also living in the UK at that time, just before the global cataclysm that wiped out many large mammal species.
About 13,000 years ago these species died out in a mass extinction. Figuring out the reason behind this, Dr Barnett said, was one of the last great scientific mysteries.
He said: “There are a couple of different schools of thought. It could have been climate change or something to do with humans. Humans could have been killing off their prey or killing the lions themselves.
“The extinction is a big question that remains unresolved. More research and more advanced genetic analysis may help answer it.”http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/oxfordshire/7974948.stm

DIY Bunker – Not So Difficult After All?

DIY Bunker – Not So Difficult After All?

The thing about bunkers and survival shelters is that anything is better than nothing (unless your design causes a cave-in or suffocation…)
Here’s a great example of how all you need is a little time, a little cash, some basic skills and a backyard:

$500 for an old fuel tank
a hole to sit it in
pile some dirt on top, add a retaining wall
install a door and steps
accessorize!

FIXED: 2012 Debunked – Excellent Video

Note: This video was removed from YouTube, but has turned up again, so I’ve updated this, and there’s a permanent link to the video as well now.
Although a good portion of my life is dedicated to promoting the need to prepare for the worst in 2012, the amount of misinformation and bad science out there bothers me a lot. Consequently I love it when someone puts time and effort into creating a 2012 video like this one:
It’s well worth watching for anyone who wants to understand what the “galactic alignment” is all about, and what it isn’t.
