Space Storm Alert

It is midnight on 22 September 2012 and the skies above Manhattan are filled with a flickering curtain of colourful light. Few New Yorkers have seen the aurora this far south but their fascination is short-lived. Within a few seconds, electric bulbs dim and flicker, then become unusually bright for a fleeting moment. Then all the lights in the state go out. Within 90 seconds, the entire eastern half of the US is without power.

A year later and millions of Americans are dead and the nation’s infrastructure lies in tatters. The World Bank declares America a developing nation. Europe, Scandinavia, China and Japan are also struggling to recover from the same fateful event – a violent storm, 150 million kilometres away on the surface of the sun.

Rather catastrophic stuff for a New Scientist article! However the reason they are reporting it is because the threat is very real indeed. They are referring to the same NASA report I mentioned in early March, that highlights the current scenario – overloaded, out-dated power grids, and a sun that from time to time sends storms our way. Put the two together, and add in our extreme dependence on electricity, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Although it could happen at any time, the peak of the solar cycle offers up more opportunity, hence the 2012 date in the scenario quoted above.

Fortunately on a personal level, this is one disaster that you can survive by having a backup power supply, and plenty of food and water available. Folks in the countryside will have it easier, if they are prepared.

To me it is extraordinary that the USA isn’t doing everything in their power to upgrade their power grid today. Could they get caught out, due to lack of sensible preparation and precaution, like with Katrina??

    I am a single lady. My daughter’s are grown and continue to ignore me or mistreat me, pick one. lol. I am 57, they are 35 and 40. Both married and buying homes. I rent. I am also disabled. Degenerative joint disease. I am trying to have my second hip replaced as soon as possible. I feel I will need to be able to walk. This scares me a lot. I feel blessed in many ways. I have great friends. I have a small pick-up with a camper shell on it and a kitty. Don’t know where I would go, but if I see tanks in our city streets etc, i will figure it out in a hurry. I am buying a few canned goods that can be eaten from the can. I have a lantern(batteries). I am a good camper. I have read ancient history for most of my life and there is a reason the Mayan calendar ends on Dec 21, 2012. It is the end of our world AS WE KNOW IT. It is the BEGINNING of much more, think beauty and peace and love. Life like it should be. No more fences. Think positive. My life is in God’s hands and I have faith things will be okay. We need to stay informed. Be aware of things like “a new world order”, run if you hear that! K, I’m done.

    First of all this is all speculation, no-one can know but it may happen seeing how our elecrical grid is due to fail anyway. What has me perplexed is the fact that our Government can not implament the repairs and replacement of an already decrepid grid. With the possability of a large CME knocking out the grid you would think that the Government would want to install prooven grounding tecniques in order to avoid such an incident. It seems our concerns have fallen on deaf ears, it also seems that certain NASA officials are lying or can’t agree amoungst themselves as to the possabilities of such an event. Either way the grid is due to collapes.
