2012: Science or Superstition - A Review

2012: Science or Superstition (2008), directed by Rich Rosell.
Experts interviewed include: Walter Cruttenden, Graham Hancock, John Major Jenkins, Lawrence E. Joseph, Jim Marrs, Daniel Pinchbeck, Douglas Rushkoff, Dr. Alberto Villoldo & John Anthony West

2012: Science or Superstition is the latest 2012 documentary, and the best I have seen to date. It ticks many boxes:
  • numerous 2012-related authors interviewed
  • calm, not sensationalist
  • suitable for newbies, but plenty of food for thought for 2012 veterans
  • happy skepticism included
As any serious doco should, both sides are presented - those that are predicting an apocalypse, and those who believe humans will be entering a new age of consciousness.

To give you an idea of the roster of quality interviewees, 12 are named on the DVD cover, and Robert Bauval didn't make that list. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of Alonso Mendez from the Maya Exploration Center), and the cheeky archaeoastronomer Anthony Aveni (he's the skeptic, but acting like a believer playing devil's advocate...).

Depending on who you ask, 2012 can be related to almost anything. To the ancient Mayans, the definition is rather narrow: ages, stars, catastrophe and rebirth. Fittingly, these are the main topics of the film. Precession is nicely explained in several ways, and I was intrigued to discover that the last page of the Dresden Codex describes a flood.

If there is a fault, the solar maximum of 2012 was discussed without any mention of the maximum being on a 7-year cycle, and that nothing bad happened last time, or the time before. But that can be forgiven because both types of pole shift (magnetic & crustal) got a mention.

This DVD belongs in your library. Watch it once to learn new aspects of 2012, and keep it to show curious friends and relatives.

(Americans can download it from iTunes)

If the theory is based on the end of the Mayan calendar, then one should look up and understand what did the end of a cycle meant to the Mayans; there is speculations that it meant re-birth, or significant change. One thing that does bother me is the fact that thousands of years ago, more than two civilization stared working on erecting monuments to the goods (seen in the Sumerian tablets, and egyptian and Mayan pyramids) that are constructed very similar in shape and in purpose. At the time there was no means of comunication, and yet we still see the edifications raised with the sole purpose to serve the Gods. Couldit be that there is a connection with the "newly" found planet "x" (although the Sumerians had it inscribed in their tablets long time ago).
To my understanding the end of a cycle only means that it will repeat itself, over and over again, however, the world will be face to forego an extreme transformation in order to endure life.

Personally i think they just had to end the calender somewhere, just like any good story theres a beginning and an end, hence Dec. 21, 2012. To me i think the story was developed as theory by one person, and blown way out of proportion by many others, no different than that excersise some teachers made students do where they whispered something into their ear and each student passed it on to another to see how far the story strayed from what was originally said, each person adding something more enticing to get the gullible people in the group to believe it was actually true. The theory is too open ended, " Something cataclismic will happen but yet we may be able to change the outcome" basically it all comes down to whos got the more believeable story. As for ancient locations and astrological positioning of monuments, I'm not doubting Egyptians or Mayans intellegence, they were very intellectual for their time. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Ill check back after new years 2013 to see how you guys are holding up.

monstergoof will let everyone show their prophetness. It's kind of cool how each person has a superstition related to their thoughts of the future. http://goofbucket.com/pg/blog/monstergoof/read/10491/my-hero

Thank you, I feel it's all hype and superstition. The maya neve got to recycle their calendar, they died out. It's simple forks they just start over, no floods, no balls of fire from space, no end times coming.

I should clarify that 'apocalypse' means only 'to reveal', what people want to watch out for is 'Armageddon' not 'apocalypse'.
