Mysterious Light Pillars from Latvia

Light pillars are a known phenomenon, but they usually look like this:

The Cause
----------
Columns of light apparently beaming directly upwards from unshielded (and wastefully polluting) lights are sometimes visible during very cold weather. Plate shaped ice crystals, normally only present in high clouds, float in the air close to the ground and their horizontal facets reflect light back downwards.

I don't know if anyone else has heard of things like this, but like Brother Rolf says, signs in the sky...

I have friends in India who saw saw 'sheets of fire' in the middle of an intense downpour.

Yes, odd as it sounds, fire in the rain.

My friends aren't given to paranoia or anything like that. Has anyone else seen or heard of anything like this?
