Could SuperBugs Kill Us All?
While most 2012ers concentrate on the big things (supernova, pole shift, everyone shifts to the nth dimension), perhaps a microscopic bug could be the cause of our demise?
Doctors are running out of treatments for trauma victims and critically ill patients because of infections from drug resistant microbes – even after resorting to medicines thrown out 20 years ago because of severe side effects, scientists are reporting.
Soon most, if not all, antibiotics will be ineffective, which is a shame, because modern western medicine depends on them a whole lot.
Unfortunately, our use of antibiotics to cause cattle to gain weight, has back-fired on us. Gordon Gecko was wrong. Greed is not good.
Humans previously almost died out
“At one point our species may have been down to as few as 2,000 individuals” reports National Geographic. While their dating of this near demise is dependent on mitochondrial DNA, and certain assumptions that may not be accurate – regardless of when this event occured, it should be enough evidence for us to prepare for it happening again.
Or at the very least, contemplate how close we came to you and your family never existing!
Around 200,000 years ago, modern humans emerged as a distinct species. All people alive today can trace their ancestry back to these humans, according to previous studies.
By the time the first great migrations out of Africa began, around 60,000 years ago, humanity had split into distinct populations with unique genetic lineages
…”The population size was driven down to probably as low as 2,000 individuals, perhaps—just a few hundred individuals in each population,” Wells added.
“We were on the brink …
Survivalists Profiled on CNN
From the trainspotting variety:
Derek is compiling a survival guide on how to cope after the total collapse of society. It is, as you can imagine, a big job… What this disaster might be is anyone’s guess, says Derek, but he’s got his hunches.
To the pro:
For defenders of the movement, like Jim Rawles who runs a survivalist blog and lives “in a very lightly populated region west of the Rockies” this perversion by a “lunatic fringe” distorts the true message of survivalism, which is, in many ways, just about personal freedom… Their life is almost entirely self-sufficient: They keep livestock, hunt elk and the children are schooled at home. Stored away in the ranch somewhere is a three-year supply of food.
CNN meets these two survivalists. And nicely points out that they are preparing for whatever, just in case.
Supporting Evolution Snippets from New Scientist
Can mutation really lead to the evolution of new species?
Yes. Several species of abalone shellfish have evolved due to mutations in the protein “key” on the surface of sperm that binds to a “lock” on the surface of eggs. This might appear impossible, but it turns out that some eggs are prepared to be penetrated by deviant sperm. The same thing can happen in fruit flies, and likely in many other groups too. In yeasts, the mutations that led to some new species forming have not only been identified, they have even been reversed.

Organisms do not always hang about waiting for a helpful mutation to occur. For instance, the parasite that causes sleeping sickness has thousands of spare genes for its coat proteins, which it mixes and matches to generate new coats faster than its host’s immune system can keep up.
More controversially, a few biologists think some microbes may have …
Wife Swap USA wants a 2012 couple
This email is doing the rounds and seems legit. So if you’re actually preparing for 2012 survival, and don’t mind being made to look like fools, get more info here.
Are you a family that is actively preparing for the year 2012? The hit reality show, Wife Swap, which airs on ABC Television’s primetime line-up, is looking for outgoing and unique families to feature on our show. Specifically, we’re looking for families who believe in the Mayan calendar and are currently preparing in some way for December 21, 2012.
Mayan Cosmology Predicts US Financial Collapse
Written in a blog, Jan, 2008:
…the Mayan cosmology forecasts that the world capitalist system will begin its final collapse in November of 2007. As a political astrologer, I would want to add that the planetary configurations that mark the heavens in the years circa 2012 bear a strong resemblance to the configurations that began with 1929 and lasted through the 1930’s, before finally opening out into the titanic victory of World War Two and the Chinese revolution.
SO, it’s juts astrology then, regardless of who was charting the stars.
Welcome to an ever-increasing trend towards co-opting ancient Mayans and the 2012 meme to suit one’s own cause or philosophy.
Eta Carinae – A Risk to Earth?
According to a recent report, it could affect Earth when it goes supernova, but not in a way you’d think…
The Good News (according to current models)
——————————————-
Fortunately, Eta Carinae is far away, at least 7,500 light-years from Earth. If it explodes, most of its energy will be scattered or absorbed in the vast emptiness of space. It also happens to be tilted about 45 degrees from the line of sight to Earth, so any type of gamma-ray burst, a high-energy outburst expected with this star’s eventual eruption, would miss the Earth. Cosmic rays would be diffused by magnetic fields, and most of the damaging light would not affect life on Earth.
The Potentially Bad News
————————-
But what if a supernova were 100 times brighter than usual? Would there be any risk to life on Earth then? Astronomers found such a record-breaking supernova last year, SN 2006gy.
It turns out that even though SN 2006gy …
