History Channel: Doomsday 2012: The End of Days

The History Channel has been a great promoter of the 2012 topic. This one screened on Jan 21 & 22.
There are prophecies and oracles from around the world that all seem to point to December 21, 2012 as doomsday. The ancient Mayan Calendar, the medieval predictions of Merlin, the Book of Revelation and the Chinese oracle of the I Ching all point to this specific date as the end of civilization. A new technology called "The Web-Bot Project" makes massive scans of the internet as a means of forecasting the future... and has turned up the same dreaded date: 2012. Skeptics point to a long history of "Failed Doomsdays", but many oracles of doom throughout history have a disturbingly accurate track record. As the year 2012 ticks ever closer we'll speculate if there are any reasons to believe these doomsayers.

Unfortunately, they far overstate the facts -- neither Revelation nor the I Ching give the December 21, 2012 date. What the show does is offer the rather immature argument that the Mayans point to December 21, 2012 as the end of time, and hey, Revelation and the I Ching point to the End of Time, too, so they must all be talking about the same date....

Um, not quite. Still, a fascinating show to see how all the different traditions speak of the end times.

i read recently on the internet that a book by two scholarly brothers was published in '72 about how the I-Ching and in it explains that it is really a calendar of sorts and does describe 12/22/2012 as the end of the world as we know it. i will try and find that art. for everyone but hope some one of ya'll can produce it for us instead. I would like to read it again so that i can better understand what it said. it was good.
basically it was about the accelerating pace of change.

Nostradamus also predicted that something castrophic will happen in 2012, but did not predict the end of the world. Perhaps a polar shift due to the galactic alignment of the sun or an asteroid or something. Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in a much later date. Nostradamus has predicted many events that have come true.

The thing is perhaps the mayans end their calendar on that date because say if a polar shift did happen it would end the world as we know it. If the earth started to rotate in the opposite direction it would explain why the calendar would end.

Also, scientist have discover that a polar shift has happen to the earth before. A polar shift would probably wipe almost all living things, but not all.

There has also been speculation about nibiru on youtube, which was a nice watch, but not very believable.

This was an "old" show. I first saw it July 2007. Whether anyone wants to believe the 12/21/2012 is the end of the world as we know it or not. No intelligent
person can objectively process all of the disparate information from many disparate sources and casually dismiss the date.

If nothing at all happens on that day, the day (December 21, 2012) will still be significant, because all of the focus it's getting and the anticipation that will naturally follow. I watch History, Science, Discovery, The Learning Channel, etc...what really peaked my interest after seeing this show (first in July 2007), and was, I must say a little disturbing was, how I began noticing that programs that had nothing to do with 12/21/2012, addressed subjects that most certainly will have affect...as an example: There was a show on discovery Channel that was only about the Sun (very generic) how old, possible life span, etc. Then they talked about Solar Cycles..how the Sun shifts it's polarity approximately every 11 years and how it could potentially cause havoc on electronic technology…they anticipate the next to occur December 2012. There was another show on the History Channel on the recently discovered and produced "lost book of Nostradamus". It’s a 2 hour show, so you have to watch it to get the details…but of course December 12, 2012 figures prominently…

Gottahavefaith, I agree that the re-occurrence of the date from so many different disparate sources has been startling. I've noticed the same trend. I did watch the Nostradamus show, but don't remember the specific 12/21 date coming into play -- can anyone elaborate? Thanks!

whirlwinded: Thanks for your comment. Yes, it was in there. I did a search "lost book of Nostradamus" and it brought up that History Channel will re air the program Tuesday January 29 @ 8:00 a.m. EST...(in the US).

i was hoping someone else on this forum would have knowledge of the book published in '72 on the I- Ching that said that the end would come on 12/22/2012.
i thought maybe i linked to it from this site.

I did watch doomsday 2012 when it first aired. A week later, I also watched "the mayan doomsday, 2012".

Since then , I have also noticed a lot of reference to this date. A book, "apocalypse 2012" by Lawrence Joseph sort of summarizes all the theories relating to 2012. Although it does not have enough scientific facts to back up the theories, it makes for very interesting reading.
I like scientific facts so I tried to look for scientific explanations for the various myths and legends that relate to 2012.

I found 3 startling data.

1. As the moon orbit’s the earth, the earth revolves around the sun, the whole solar system also revolves around the center of the galaxy. We are now approaching a very dense cloud of galactic debris. In 2012, the plane of the solar system is supposed to be 90 degrees to the plane of the galactic band (not the center of the galaxy as “doomsday 2012 “ described). This increases the chance of an asteroid hit and somewhat supports the stories about the "cross" in mayan stories and the pole shift theories.
check out http://www.biocab.org/Coplanarity_Solar_System_and_Galaxy.html

2. The mayans put a lot of emphasis on Venus. Although it appears every day, there is a time when it travels in the sky in a certain way called the transit. In early 2004, NASA published : “On June 8th, 2004 a celestial event of historical scientific importance will occur when the silhouette of the planet Venus once again crosses the face of the Sun as seen from the Earth. This event or transit of Venus last occurred in 1882, so no one alive today has ever witnessed the transit of Venus .”
Six months after the transit, a huge earthquake and the tsunami occurred.
The next transit will occur on june 5, 2012. Will we see another earthquake? Is this the relationship of venus to the soltices?
After 2012, the next transit will be in the next century.. . Dec 11, 2117.

3. Solar cycles and their effect on the earth. Solar cycles happen every 12 years. This is an event where the sun produces magnetic solar flares that has different effects on earth. The higher the number and intensity of the flares, the worse it’s effects. Solar cycle 24 is supposed to start on march of this year and maximizes on 2012. This is predicted to be the most intense solar cycle in history and will have devastating effects on all forms of communication and power grids. If a large one hits us, it can nuke us like a giant microwave oven.

Will all these events contribute to major disaster in 2012? I don’t know.

I do respect the mayan astronomical observations. Long before Copernicus, Aristotle and Ptolemy argued whether the sun revolved around the earth or vice versa, the mayans were able to predict an eclipse to the last second!

The information on the I Ching and it's realtion to 2012 can be found in the work done by Terence
McKenna "Time Wave Zero". Basically McKenna discovered a pattern in the I Ching that when the hexagrams are laid out starting with the inception of the I Ching the pattern ends exactly on DEC 21, 20012. Mine is a simplistic explanation of a interesting discovery by McKenna, google "Time Wave Zero" for a better explanation.

On the I Ching and 2012. The I Ching does not give 2012 as the end of time. Terrence McKenna and his work with the I Ching called "Time Wave Zero" does.

McKenna noticed a pattern in the hexagrams of the I Ching and plotted them with the inception of the I Ching as the start date, the end date comes to Dec, 21 2012.

Forgive me for my simplistic explanation, for a better one google "Time Wave Zero"

Just a thought

Look deeply into the meaning of words. Everyone is ranting about the "apocalypse". I say bring it on because the original Greek translation of the word "apocalypse" is "to uncover, reveal" not "the Earth will be blown to bits."

So maybe 2012 will start a new era where our true spiritual natures will be revealed. And we will evolve to a higer aspect. Not sure but I do know we can't keep going down the road we are on.

However you look at it there are many scources that point to Dec 21,2012 as a very important date. "The end of time" or as I and many other people think "the end of time as we know it."

Remember "what we focus on expands". If we focus on the destruction of our planet we will make it happen. Or if we focus on believing that just maybe the Maya, the Hopi, the Egyptians and other Ancients knew something that we have long forgotten, maybe we will be on the path to a higher and better place.

Dot said earlier that he found 3 startling data, I have found a fourth:
There is a 10th planet described by the ancient Sumarians as Nibiru, which orbits between our sun and a twin dwarf sun some 51 light years away. They say its orbit takes some 3600 + years to complete. http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_sitchin.htm#Additional_Information

Guess what, the astrnomic community has found an object they have called Planet X in Orions belt and it appears to be heading this way. Could this be Nibiru? I checked out some other sites by Googling Nibiru and some of the stuff I read blew my mind! Apparently it is scheduled to enter our solar system and be visable by ordinary telescope by May 15/2009. It will be visable to the naked eye as a red cross by 2011, will orbit our sun 30 degrees above our solar systems elyptical plane and return from below our solar systems elyptical pane heading back out of our solar system. It is expected to come closest to the sun and earth between Dec 21, 2012 and Feb 14, 2013. During which great earthquakes and tidal waves will occur. Add this to what is expected to be worst ever solar sun spot activity recorded and the fact that the sun will experience a polar reversal and we will have a good chance that some really bad is going to happen here on earth!

The serious problems may not come from celestial events but rather from knee-jerk reaction to hype in the early months of 20012. Our failure to exercise good judgement could leave us in a global financial catastrophe we will not recover from. Thanks, Frank

it's not the celestial event, it's the volcanoes, earthquakes, extended draughts, flooding, refugee crisis's, disease epidemics, anarchy, wars and rumors of wars, loss of civil liberties and imposition of martial law, etc., etc. that will cause the knee jerk reactions that will cause undo panic and disruption in the economy or "system". IMO that system could do for a change anyway. Unfortunate that it happen so abruptly.

You guys have way too much time on your hands. You probably all thought that "the end of days" was going to happen with Y2K. Do you honestly believe that a culture from thousands of years ago, can predict the future? You back up your so called theories with facts you find on the web looking for a reason this might be true. I can look on the web and find 1000 Elvis sitings. What I find way more interesting than doomsday is the fact that so many of you believe this crap. I have a theory of my own. My theory is that most of you live in a relatives basement and haven't had sex in a very, very long time. 2012 bring it on. It would be cool to see.

I'm just curious as to why you felt the need to post on this blog. Maybe you have trouble reading also and got lost on the WEB. Who said everyone here believes 2012 will be Doomsday. This is a blog about the TV program.

Dan you hit it right on the HEAD…

Randy you’re an IDIOT. Funny, I bet you don’t have a clue as to why, huh? This Blog’s members are all of similar thought and we all found our way here to discuss this TV program considerately, and with mutual respect.

You however, took time out of what I imagine is a petty and pathetic existence to seek out this Blog, read through all of the entries…and then you took more time to write an entry that was mean, belittling and unwelcome. Nothing makes you pathetic but your behavior here and how you treat people. I’m sure you are as little in the real world. Everyone here knows it too and probably most of all, YOU KNOW IT

Funny, you never know who’s who and not for nothing, but I happen to be a well adjusted (including sex) retired NFL (that’s the National Football League) player and I find this Forum interesting, and I personally don’t appreciate your input…SO, GO AWAY…

It was said that Saudi Arabia has reached its oil export peak. this could mean that if Saudi Arabia cant supply every customer with the oil they consume they will have to start cutting back on their export. i believe the end will begin with a true announced war over oil. could happen or not hell life on earth has been destroyed and recreated many times. no body knows when

I just saw the history channel lost book of nostradamus. I thought the images to be quite compelling but the authenticity to be lacking. the burning tower in singular, not 2 towers as with 9/11 and more likely was just a copy of the tower tarot card used by nostradamus and the occult to fortell doom. regardless though I do find the subject of 2012 fascinating. the image of 3 lunar eclipses and a solar eclipse predicting the period of 1992-2012 doesn't really make sense. there are all kinds of lunar and solar eclipses happening all the time(like more than 1 year). I dont see where they get 1992-2012 numbers. I also wonder if anyone has a precise way to measure the date the mayans have supposedly been able to gather (12/21/2012) that states the plane of solar system aligns with the plane of the milky way in coincidence with the alignment of the precession of the equatorial axis. the history channel says its a 13,000 year occurence but i would think modern astronomy could pinpoint the date. my personal feelings of 2012 is that it will be a period of revelation - perhaps the serpent will again hand us the apple and we will eat the knowledge of the gods. but this time the serpent will be the annunaki/sumerian style alien gods. I feel like the day we clone our first human is the day they have to step in and intervene lest we become gods as great as they are on our own

My calendar runs out on 31, December 2008. At that point, I will get a new one based on the symbols Mon, Tues, Wed, etc., Jan. Feb, March, etc. Could not the simplest explanation for the Mayan calendar ending on 12/21/2012 just be that that's when this calendar runs out and you have to get a new one?

Again look into the meaning of words, "apocalypse" for example the original Greek translation of the word "apocalypse" is "to uncover, reveal" not "the Earth will be blown to bits."

And the "end of days" is what has been predicited for eons. The end of days or "end of time as we know it."

It is so far reaching a concept to wrap the mind around, that what we are living now is an illusion and the universe is getting ready to make an adjustment?

Will it be "revealed" to us that time and space are no longer neccessary for our spiritual evoulition and that there will be "and end to time as we know it"

The Romans screwed up time keeping for us so who knows for sure if 12/21/2012 is the date or the calendar is off by two months or twenty years.

I would not sell everything I had and expect everyting to be over. And better use of your "time" is to look at your life and ask "am I living my life in accordance with the universal laws, or the laws as laid down by the Master Soul and am I ready to evoulve to the next plane?

Miko "apocalypse" is not the word the Mayans used to describe the end of days or time as we know it they didnt even spoke Spanish nor English they just encrypted on the rock what they foresaw and this prediction is very relevant because what they predicted hundreds of years in advance hapend on the hour day month and year of prediction like the arrival of the Spaniards the only thing they missed is that they though the Spaniards were gods.

I never said the Mayans used the word. I said we need to look into the meaning of words. The Maya said this world would pass and we we would enter a new world.

I said there is to much talk about the "end of the world" and "apocalypse" means an unvieling or new understanding or new world.

IF ther is a new world transition in our lifetime, there are things that we can all do to "cusion" the event in unifying ways. I have a child. For one thing, we could make a concious choice to help naturally depopulate ourselves for the sake of the future generations by not having babies during this time of civil collapse. We need to heal ourselves and help heal earths suface somehow, and if we all are not willing to do without our luxuries, then we need to decrease demand. I am so amazed at how we people can even communicate the way we do, along with actually creating machines out of man made materials that perform so precisly. Human potential scares the crap out of me because all that we create is based on the dollar. Think of all the things people do for money. Corporate scamming, personal scamming, robbery, prostitution, narcotic dealing, hitmen, government scams and secrets, ect...As the dollar becomes the most important member of society, we are losing our values in the growing demand to have even more money. I think the creator of the money idea had some pretty bad trust issues, and now look what we've done. Now, for the love of our existing children, we need to work together to help ensure they have water to drink in 40 years. I know we probably won't all love everyone, but we need to work together as a team to return to a more natural way of life. After all....Did we inherit this earth from our grandfathers or are we borrowing it from our children? Time for selflessness. As far as 2012, whether the date is significant or not (I believe it is), if it gets enough attention maybe people will learn to be better to eachother in hopes of going OR going on in a peaceful way.

Hey, cool it, guys. Nothing is going to happen. As we all know, 2012 is the year that the Mayan Calendar ends. But that does not mean the end of the world... As stated on Universe Today, Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki quotes with simplicity:

“…when a calendar comes to the end of a cycle, it just rolls over into the next cycle. In our Western society, every year 31 December is followed, not by the End of the World, but by 1 January. So 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan calendar will be followed by 0.0.0.0.1 - or good-ol’ 22 December 2012, with only a few shopping days left to Christmas.”

I am asserting now: Nothing will happen.

I look at this whole scenerio from two different veiw.

The thing that frightens me is the science and how that aligns with at least the potentail for something to happen. What I found that made me kinda do a double take is that nothing will happen in 2012 from an interesting source...A Mayan archialogist that says that this date is not predicted in any way, shape or form to be negative. That it is just a start of a new cycle. This is based off the cultural way with which the Mayan's depicted feared things in their writings. That provides me comfort.

I look at this stuff because it hit a chord with me. I have no knowledge of anything good or bad happening. But, my heart, seems to keep warning me. None of the doomsday garbage of the past has ever bothered me.....at all. I hope for the best for everyone and just wanted say, that I won't spend the next few years wasting alot of time....Just in case...Love a little more take an extra few for the kids....appreciate the little things little more....It can't hurt.
