"If you enjoyed the challenge of searching for the University frog, try to spot an astronaut, the brainchild of the new stonemasons responsible for restoring the jambs whose stone had deteriorated."

What temple, where? Is there a larger shot to show the temple also? There needs to be more info for this to be believable.

Really detailed carving for something very old and should have endured weathering and acidic moisture from rain, especially when it is occuring in Rome????

This ia not ancient. It's a carving of a cosmonaut on a building somewhere in the Soviet Union (sorry that I don't know which building and where excately). Depictions of cosmonauts as carvings, frescos, mosaics were very common in the USSR from 1961 onwards, they played a vital part of the Soviet propaganda of their communist victory of "conquering the space".
