Testes multiply mutations

The testes in humans may act as mutation multipliers that raise the odds of passing improved DNA to offspring – but that can also backfire by increasing the frequency of certain diseases.

In my opinion, it's not the site that receives more damage, but rather those cells "choose" not to repair themselves, because they know that when they create sperm, that sperm will have an effect on the next generation, and mutations are good for the species.

I would further argue that the DNA selectively repairs itself based on what it thinks are good mutations and bad mutations. Obviously it gets it wrong a lot of the time, but it could be the mechanism that has made us the amazing creatures we are today.

Comet wiped out the wooly mammoth and mastodon?

That means Bigelow's Sundancer module, which will be designed to accommodate three people, could be ready to go even before 2010.

2012 - Only a Financial Cataclysm?

Economists, fund managers and technical analysts rarely agree with each other. But if it is 2012, many of them seem to have a consensus. For them, 2012 spells only one thing - global meltdown in financial markets.

South Africa 2012 Community - Survival Has Begun!

Patrick Geryl and others have finalised plans for a survival community in South Africa. They intend to purchase a 200ha farm and build dwellings on it, and cultivate the land. The long-term (but before 2012!) plans include building a bunker and stockpiling 4 years worth of food & supplies.

Turn off a gene, grow a second head

It is that simple, well it is if the patient is a jellyfish.

So, if I am correct in thinking that during the last global cataclysm, cosmic ray bombardment caused enough DNA mutations to create new species, the many-headed Hydra of ancient greek myths could have been a real species, for a while. So too could have the Cerberus once existed – a monstrous three-headed dog that guards the gate to Hades... (more multi-headed creatures).

Obviously it wouldn't have lasted too many generations, but possibly long enough to be recalled in myths.

New AGNs discovered

NASA’s Swift satellite and the Japanese/U.S. Suzaku X-ray observatory has discovered a new class of active galactic nuclei (AGN)

...Evidence for this new type of AGN began surfacing over the past two years. Using Swift’s Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), a team led by Tueller has found several hundred relatively nearby AGNs that were previously missed because their visible and ultraviolet light was smothered by gas and dust. The BAT was able to detect high-energy X-rays from these heavily blanketed AGNs because, unlike visible light, high-energy X-rays can punch through thick gas and dust.

As scientists keep finding new space nasties, one must wonder about the ones nearby that have not been discovered yet...
