Magnetic PoleShift mentioned in the Economist
Flips have happened as close together as 50,000 years, though the last one was 780,000 years ago. But, as discussed at the Greenland Space Science Symposium, held in Kangerlussuaq this week, the signs are that another flip is coming soon.I'm wondering if all the recent exposure (Economist, USA Today, History Channel, Hollywood movies) is a good thing, because some people with money or influence might be convinced to do something, or bad because it is over-popularizing, dumbing-down and making it all sound a bit crackpot.
One of those signs is that the strength of the field has been falling by 5% a century recently. A similar (though more rapid) diminution accompanies the reversing of the sun's magnetic field, which happens every 11 years or so. Other evidence comes from old navigation records. Researchers such as Nils Olsen, of the Danish National Space Centre, have used such records to chart the growth of patches of abnormal magnetism. They are able to do so because these records use both compass bearings and astronomical observations to locate a vessel. The changing relationship between the two shows that patches of abnormal magnetism have been growing off south-east Africa and in the South Atlantic.
Just when the magnetic field will flip is impossible to predict from what is known at the moment; the best guess is that there are still several centuries to go. Nor is it clear how long its protective shield will be down. (The record in the rocks is little help, since a geological eyeblink represents many human lifetimes.) But understanding how the magnetosphere works now should help to deal with the consequences if and when it vanishes.
Time will tell.

Have you read the extensive comments made by the "sleeping prophet" Edgar Cayce on Pole shifts and continental realignment ? Cayce made his predictions in the 1930s & 40s relavant to our time frame NOW. The Association for Research & Enlightenment, and the Edgar Cayce center are in Virginia Beach Va. USA and host seminars on this.
I have also been doing research on this and from what i've been reading it's likely that the solar max in 2011/2012 will have bad effects on earth with solar storms distrupting our electromagnetic field. time will tell if earths deffenses are up to it. this can also shifts earths poles.
The year 2012 is of particular interest to me because of dreams and things being revealed to me that something big in my life is going to happen in 2012. Why this particular year is of any importaince I dont know but It looms big in my life.
Not really sure how the solar maximum that is supposedly happening in 2012 is supposed to cause our magnetic poles to switch or go away completely. It's true that the magnetosphere is our protective shield from the sun's harmful ions. It is not entirely known why we even have a magnetic field to begin with. We have our theories but nothing has been very conclusive.
From what I know, it will not be a good thing if our magnetic field goes out during a solar maximum.
I am not typically moved by "doomsday" predictions. I watch a lot of scientific TV like History, Discovery, Science Channel, etc. and recently started to put together some seemingly disparate shows. One was of course the Doomsday 2012 show on History then another show about the Sun a month earlier where they predict Solar Pole shift will happen around 12/21/2012...there is also the astronomical fact of planetary alignment (which happens only once in approx 5k years) Earth - Sun - Center of the Milky way/Our Galaxy. Then there was another show talking about Super Massive Black Holes how scientist discovered that there are Super Massive Black Holes at the center of ever galaxy including ours. Food for thought...
